Any difference?

I own an 81' diesel Rabbit with a 4 spd tranny. I want a 5 spd. I know where I can get a 5 spd tranny off of an 80' gasoline Rabbit. The bell housing looks the same. Would it be possible to swap trannies?

Yes you definitly can do it. You will need the mk1 5 speed top tranny mount as well as the 5 speed shifter linkage.

What is your tranny code? If it's a 4A just leave it, it's better then most 5 speeds in regards to top gear ratio

check www.scirocco.org/gears to see what you'll be swapping in. Take careful note of the year of tranny you are installing. www.brokevw.com explains how to read the date code

Tyler,

I got the 5 spd tranny for $125 and that included removal, shifter and linkages. I had a hell of time getting out the original 4 spd with just me and regular tools. I then got the 5 spd all cleaned up and my father helped me hoist it up in and click into the engine. I was kind of anxious that it might not work judging from all of the swearing and amount fluids coming out  , but then we got her in and wired up the starter to the battery and it cranked over and idled smooth as butter! :D
