New guy here, how long to keep '92 ?
« on: February 12, 2005, 02:50:21 pm »
Hi, new guy here!
Am in Laval just out of Montreal. Currently own an '92 4 door black non turbo Jetta diesel , bought used in '96, now at 400,000+ km's.
I dismanteled the car when I first got it and rustproofed it like it was going out of style. Still looks new with original paint, will post pics later.
Anyhow this is the fourth VW disel owned and must say that this little German built '92 is the best ever.
How long should I plan on keeping it?
Head has never been off BTW.
No need to add oil between 5000 km oil changes.
Is this a good model?
I was thinking about a used New Bettle TDI lately but hate to get into debt for a car when I don't really have to.
Thanks,
Hugh

I've got the same car but it's missing the trunk.  I've been running synthetic in mine and it just keeps getting stronger.  Running Shell Ultra Diesel has been helping me too.  I'm now getting 925 km per tank.  That's up from 800 km back when I got the car in October but not as good as new.

Cheers, Steve

Keep it.

Low maintenance, low insurance.

An idea would actualy be to get a second one.

Those cars don't die easely.

Keep it FOR EVAR!

You want a car that's filled with electronic and breaks all the time?

Get any A4...you'll have hours of fun figuring out what craped out...

After all you wrote : is that a rhetorical question or do you need us to explain?

Nice to have support driving a 13 year old car with 400,000 km when everyone thinks you are weird because you don't have the latest and greatest like them!

This site is a good find, gives me the motivation to keep my Jetta in tip top condition.

That will make at least two of us! (exept mine is not in such pristine order and requires lots of love and investments    ... sad I do not have money as much as I have love for this rig...)

Yeah but Gropar you have the coveted 1.9TD! :D

Was thinking about an engine retrofit for my Jetta at some point in the futur, going from 1.6 non turbo to the '93-'98 1.9TD.
How doable is this?
Sorry for such a basic question but I have no knowledge of turbo's.
Out of the '79 Rabbit, '86 Golf, '87 Golf and present '92 Jetta they have all been regular no frill diesels.

That guy from spain and his GTD is getting me thinking about mods!
In Québec we are fortunate, lots of older disels to choose from also.
May even pick-up a GTI without engine at some point for a TD conversion
