Running hot low power Please give me some input
« on: August 16, 2007, 07:06:24 pm »
I have an 81 Rabbit pickup.  And it has the 1.6NA out of and 84 Jetta.  It started running hot about 5 months ago.  I put in a new rad because the old one split the tank.  It still ran hot.  I did a water pump and housing, 3 different Tstats( currently a 176).  It got a new head gasket about 2 mounths ago due to a broken timing belt. It also got a head.  Cooling fan works fine, but also has an over ride switch in case.  It will stay around 200 if your just crusing around between 35 and 55 on the flat land.  But if you go over 55 or climb a hill or creap around under 35 it will get hot.  Like 235-245. But I usually stop and shut it down when it gets that hot.  I just moved to AZ and this is a huge problem.  Please give me some input.

could be all kinds of things, dirty air filter, low oil, clogged exhaust even.

but most likely is timing, and rotted cowling around the rad.   the way it should be, is the faster you drive, the cooler it gets, and the slower you drive the hotter (so the fan has to kick on) i made some cowling out of aluminum but it didn't fit well... i need to make some more for my a/c

my timing is at 1.06 approx.  and it does spike up to halfway on the gauge even with a 160F t-stat, but goes down as soon as i start to drive from the airflow.

i think running retarded might create more heat, such as 0.95 degrees or so.
