Will this turbo fit?
« on: February 12, 2005, 12:37:31 am »
I'm still looking for a turbo to replace the knackered one on my Q-ship. My engine has a k24, but I'm wondering how tough it would be to mount up a Garrett like this one to my engine.

TIA!

I'm pretty sure that would be a direct replacement.  :D

For what it's worth, if this thing says T03 on the tag, it's what came on a 1.6 TD up here. I've got two, one in a 92 Jetta, the other other on another MF code engine. My 1.9 idi in my other 92 Jetta has something different, smaller. Haven't figured out what though! The smaller one ont the1.9 spools a lot quiker, probably a combination of more displacement and smaller turbo. I've considered switching the two, with the Garrett/airreseach going on the bigger motor, but I'm not sure if the manifolds/downpipe are the same.

Thanks for the tips, guys! The present turbo on my car is a KKK model K24, and I was thinking that the exhaust manifold mounting flanges were different between the two makes (Garrett vs. KKK). Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

I know for sure that they are interchangeable I have switched them myself back a forth a couple of times. Those two turbo's have all the same mounting dimensions so no moifications are required for swaping them.

Stan that 1.6lTD Garrett should bolt right up in place of your KKK.  Both the Garrett and KKK turbos from a 1.6lTD are interchangeable.  One thing interesting is I have never seen a Garrett like that with hardlines leading to the wastegate before...  the factory Garrett turbos had rubber hoses connecting to the wastegate not hardlines like that one (AFAIK...)  I notice from the part number there is an "X" engraved at the end, which indicates it is a rebuilt part.

The center section of that turbo in the picture is up side down  :? the oil inlet is on the bottom I guess the rebuilder forgot how it came apart  .

The smaller turbo on the 1.9 is most likely a K14, it bolts up identical to the exhaust manifold and has the same bolt pattern for the downpipe, but i am unsure of the dimensions for an identical fit up. the only thing i am sure of is the oil return lines are different, the K24 (and probably the garret T3) on the 1.6 use a flange and a gasket off the turbo and it drains into a port in the oil pan. the K14 on the 1.9 has a threaded stem coming down and a collar nut holds the return line on, which empties into a port in the back of the block. the return line isn't pressurized so simply taking the two, cutting them in half, and using a copper hose coupler and some ring clamps should do the trick. I'm in the process of fitting the K14 to a 1.6 motor, same boost capabilities with much faster spooling seems like a good idea. I was informed in another message thread that the european GTD's came from the factory with the 1.6 and K14 combo along with the intercooler. if VW decided to go that path for their high performance TD then it must make sense!

my 1.9 had the dinky k03 which spooled very quickly, full boost almost as soon as my foot was on the floor above 2000 rpm, it has a different exhaust manifold (3 bolt flange) and downpipe (acts as wastegate cover as well)

Sadly (at least for me), that turbo went for over $500...

Hey, thanks for the link! :D

Do any of you guys know how this A/R compares to the 1.6TD turbos used on vee-dub's? My impression is that the MB uses a somewhat larger turbo than is optimal for a 1.6TD.

Thanks!

Edit: I wonder if I could make this one work? ;)

turbo wanted
« Reply #13 on: February 24, 2005, 01:57:59 pm »
i have no idea the turbo on mine, but something that spools faster would be great!
right now i have 8-9 psi so top end of like 12-13 would work for me
Any suggestions?? Willing to trade?
