broke a timing belt......... :(
« on: August 15, 2007, 02:25:07 pm »
Belt was replaced within the last year, had to replace a leaking fuel pump and did the belt at the same time. Wife says she was doing about 50 k, heard a pop, and then it quit.  I have a sneaking suspicion something else broke before the belt, but we shall see.

Anyone ever get lucky and NOT have some bent valves when this happened? I did once before in an 88 gas fox, but I'm not holding my breath! Been looking for another car anyway, body has about 600,000 km of ontario winters........  engine showed about 420 lbs a year (or more) ago when I did the injectors, starting wasn't great last winter.

Want to sell it to me? :D

Pop off the valve cover, I've seen lifters shatter from snapped timing belts

as far as i know, all vw gassers before '92(ish and maybe later) were all non interference motors.

a broken t-belt would leave you stranded, but repairable without much damage if any.

Not sure yet what I'm going to do with it. I probably have enough parts to put the head back together. I'm a long way from the Bay to sell you a non running car, about 7 hours! (I was born in the bay and still have relatives there, so I know how long it takes)
Got a line on a couple more cars though,  have to see what I can find before I bother tearing into this one.  I'd trade you for the truck maybe.....

You'll have to kill me first  :P

Any relatives that are around 21 years old in North Bay?

I didn't realise you were 7 hours, I was hoping for around 4 or 5

If you run into anyone with the last name "Reckzin" then I'm related. Pretty sure there's still a few Bates' in the bay I'm related to too.As for age, my cousins would all be older than that, I think some have kids younger than that.
Used to live in a cottage about 3 doors from the end of the road at Sunset Point...... It's gone now (fire) and been replaced. Lived in west ferris too.

Solved my problem. Bought a '91 Golf (1.6na) that's only got 237000km. CHEAP!! It looks a little rough around the edges, but runs good and looks really good underneath. Should last a few years. Really think it needs an AAZ though........ :D  When I get caught up around here I'll still pull the Jetta ap[art to see how bad the damage is, it's a lot nicer car.

Was the belt cover on?  Was the tensioner changed with the timing belt?  The only premature timing belt induced engine failures I've seen/heard of were due to one of the above mentioned reasons.

Andrew

Belt cover was on, didn't change the tensioner, but it was fairly fresh. I'll find out when I get into it................

Had a precombustion chamber cup come loose once in another engine, made a heck of a mess of a piston and a head, didn't stick the engine though............

We had a Rabbit that had a alternator belt about to go, and it started shreading while on the road and it got wrapped into the timing belt and broke the timing belt.  Anymore, if any of those belts are about to go, I get them changed.  It is probably a rare situation though.

If you watch any racing, you can see what rubber flying apart does as a driver cuts a tire.
