This is a 1.6 non turbo diesel from an 85 golf. The manual doesn't seem to mention these switches, or i'm looking in the wrong place so i'm hoping someone can help me out here.
There are two switches. The one on the right in the photos has a wire attached to it and the other doesn't, although it appears that there is a connector (just like the one on the other switch) ready for it. The left switch appears to be broken or missing a piece and they both have ripped dust boots at the least.
I wonder what their function is and how important they are if not functioning properly since it is a mechanical pump?

Those are throttle position switches that are part of the upshift light on the dash... a safe delete assuming you ignore the upshift light like 99 percent of the population !!

BTW, save the connectors... if the connector to the coolant sensor ever breaks (and it likely will) you now have at least one spare !!
