Common sources for oil leaks on 1.6d?
« on: November 22, 2006, 01:16:37 pm »
I have a 91 diesel, and i've nailed a few oil leaks down so far, but i seem to have 1 left coming from the front that I can trace down.

It looks like it may be coming from the oil dipstick tube. Is there anything else above/near that that could make it look like the dipstick tube is leaking? I removed it and it looks like a machined fit, no seal anywhere on it. Am I missing an O-ring on there that I dont know about?

I dont have an oil cooler, if it matters.

ps> tried searching, but it looks like this forum wont allow search by thread title

There should be a little green o-ring in there if it's a bolt in dipstick, if its a AAZ then they are an interfearance fit and if you managed to pull the tube out without taking the sump off then I doubt it's one of those!

Thanks for the info. where do i check engine code? Sounds basic enough, but i really dont know. Im not sure what you meant by bolt in. There is a bracket with a bolt to keep the dipstick tube in place, but it seems to be a press fit into the block.

Engine code is...
Well,on European models anyway...

1.Paper sticker in boot.
2.Paper sticker on the inside of the service book.
3. Stamped to the engine block, just below and between injectors 3 and 4 shrouded by that effing water pipe!

if it's a 1.6 it's not a AAZ, so it's the bolt in style one. You can get the O-ring or you can use gasket sealer. But go easy on it, you don't want the exess getting caught in places that it shouldn't. I got a warped head because of that (in the coolant though)
There really isn't anything else in the area other then the oil pan. With the engine running you might be able to see it leaking, especially if there is no o-ring. Check inside the hole in the block, the o-ring might be stuck in there.
I've fixed a leak with sealer, just clean it up nice and it should hold.

sounds good. Can you explain what you guys are referring to by "bolt in style one" as opposed to press fit? There was no bolt anywhere or bracketry near the engine block that secure the dipstick to the engine. The only bolt was up high and if im not mistaken it hooks on the alternator bracket.

libbaya, you are right.

great forum, i love this place. this is my third diesel vw, definitely the one thats needed the most work, but also has the most mileage. I'll try to figure out the part number for the o-ring if i can find my copy of etka. The parts guy at the dealer doesnt really like his job and doesnt like to make the effort to find parts.
