WTB: early "79" shift rod bearing and boots
« on: May 07, 2010, 12:41:30 pm »
I have an 80 Rabbit pu, and have the early 79 shift rod bearing assembly (3 piece plastic) with the two boots (one in front, the other behind the bearing).

Do you know a vendor that can get these parts or do you have some good boots to sell.  I would prefer to buy new bearing material since mine is intact, but loose.

Parts Place doesn't carry them and I haven't been able to find any other vendors.

I have a newer bearing assembly from an 81 Rabbit and it seems to work, but the new bearing replacement is too loose.  Does the new nylon bearing tighten up when you intall it in the hosuing?  Maybe I am too picky, but I want a "tight" shifting system.  I have rebuilt almost everything under the hood and under the body, so don't want to skimp now.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks 8)

Yeah, the shift plate is the bracket near the end of the shifting rod (near the motor) which has a bearing which the shifting rod slides through.  I have the older style and, probably needlessly am looking for the plastic parts to replace the bearing.  I do have a newer bracket, but  a new nylon bearing I bought seems to be too large of a diameter so the rod has more play than my worn old one.  I will probably stick with the old one, but the boots on the front and rear of the bearing are both torn and worn out.  I can't find the boots either.  So, maybe i'll take some from another application and try to adapt or try to buy another nylon bearing for the 1981 + vw's and see if it will be tighter.
