VNT-15 in a Rabbit
« on: May 19, 2025, 08:48:26 pm »
I like the VNT-15 turbo and 1.6 diesel combination.
It feels like plenty of power without being too much for the old 1.6.

Since they hang so low I can use the gasser intakes with the long runners and larger plenum.
1.6 TD intakes can be hard to find. I converted several gasser to diesels so had a few extra.
Probably can still find one cheap on the vortex.

Here's how I attach the gasser intake to the TDI exhaust and plug the EGR port:

The turbo sits farther to the passenger side so it's easier to build a downpipe that doesn't interfere with the shifter stuff.

And the exhaust doesn't need to be shaped like a ?. It's just a 90 where it comes out of the turbo.
Much easier exhaust to make than for the stock turbo setup.

The old 1.5 diesels didn't use the toilet bowl exhaust flange.
They had 2 support brackets attached to the block and trany, then a flex section.
I used a set of the old brackets to make this exhaust solid so it wouldn't wrench on the turbo when I get on it.

Just getting the topic started. Will need to look for old pictures..
And I have a video showing the controller that I will link to...

I remember seeing your post detailing your setup -- the vane control is mechanical with linkages? Are you still running this setup -- do you have boost/vane presets, or do you leave it fully adjustable from the cab?

Yes, I'm still using this,.. when I'm done doing some front end and brake work.

It's just set for this altitude.
If I go into the mountains I have to get under the hood and make an adjustment.
