ARB, your conversion also interested me, in that I currenly have a 90 caravan from down south that came with and still has a 2.5 turbo engine in it...plans include a manual trans (have everything already) and a built 2.5 running 72lb injectors and about 25psi of boost.  

The consensus seems to be that a 1.6 would be adequate for my needs, especially after reading ARBs thread...I have access to a free 1.6 right now as a core (sitting in the back of a van with no oil pan on it, so definitely in need of a rebuild).  I will make plans to acquire it and then start collecting bearings, oil pump, etc., and then see what the bores look like when I get the slugs out of it.  I have several intercoolers from old TDs, as well as an SRT, turbo Sprint, talon and volvo, so that area is well covered.  I also have a few garret t3s from TDs around, so I'd be looking for specs (AR, trim, etc) on a stock 1.6 turbo to compare with.

As long as the tranny you use can handle the torque - The Jeep Liberty CRD they sold here (USA) only had an automatic available. It could not handle the torque the 2.8L CRD was dumping on it. Each and every torque converter in that Jeep will fail if the engine's ECM is not de-turned for lower torque.

That's why I went with the VW diesel tranny rather than the Chrysler manual trans that came in my Caravan - I knew it would take the torque. (Besides, the weakest part of any Chrysler is the trans)

The manual I will swap in at the same time is the w56...the w58 is the rear-drive version and it comes behind the NA 7mge, which is good for about 180 ftlbs...I'm actually working on a supra 7m to 4runner w56 swap at the moment, it bolts in for the most part.  My concern with the 1.6, or any diesel swap in general, was a highway cruising speed in the 3k zone even with 31" tires, which I am thinking is high enough that I may negate any sort of fuel economy benefits I could get from a diesel conversion.

ok, so, would you mind telling me about the supra swap into a 4runner? pretty sure i will need a different trans, i have an R150 in there right now. dont suppose they make a bell housing to bolt a 7M to it?

No, there isn't...the standard recipe is NA 7m clutch, flywheel, slave and bell to connect a w56 to a 7m NA or turbo...mounts are 7m on the block, 5m in between and 22re rubbers to the frame.  Beat the firewall in an inch in a few spots, use a 2" body lift to make room and a cressida pan, pump and feed line to put the motor in an ifs truck.  Longer, but all bolts in.  About a dozen wires or so to make it run.  Use a supra pan for solid axle ones.  Go to supracharged.com...not a lot of activity of late, but good info from users like Corax and F0ggy.

I'm looking for a 22ret (turbo pickup) bell to help me with the next swap I have lined up if the 1.6 works out in my test truck...

why are you going to use a turbo trans? it has too low of a first gear. and the V6 trans is tougher. a turbo trans is a R151, V6 is R150. i like the way the gears are layed out better on a V6 trans. there isnt such a jump from first to second. my R150 feels more like a close ratio celica trans as compared to all the other non V6 trannys ive driven. and was the W56 the one that had the stick closer to the bell housing and it came in carb'd trucks right? or is that the G56? i know one has the stick farther forward on the case tho.

in one of my secret reserves of toyotas, there is an 87 turbo truck. its all ***in rusted out, but it has 135k miles on it. just got a new turbo and head right before i got it. paid 800 bucks.

but this swap wont work for me, both of my trucks came stock with V6 engines, and the mounts are in alot different location.

Not necessarily interested in the turbo trans itself, although I could probably go to tires over 33", put in some lift and still be able to make the truck move from a dead stop...the turbo bell by itself would allow me to use the same VW/Toy adapter I have now to attach a vw diesel to a v6 tranny...if the whole idea of a vw diesel in a Toy works out as far as power and cold starting, I want to obtain a nicer (read: rust-free) 87 or earlier (no E-test in Ontario for pre-88 vehicles) truck from the South.  The turbo bell allows me to consider v6 trucks as well...I think the carb trucks had a G56, but Marlin Crawler's website would be better for that kind of info.

As far as a 7m swap, I guess I got lucky with both of my trucks being 22re-powered.  The owner of supracharged.com cut Your best bet if you wanted a better motor would be the 3.4 swap, uses same mounts, tranny and a bunch of other stuff.  Need to fab a Y pipe, and do the wiring as far as I can see.

Back to my swap research...it looks like my effective rear ratio with 31s (stock is 225/75) would get me to 3.30 with a .85 overdrive...too high?

i wouldnt think so, should be pretty awesome gear ratio. and i was considering the 3.4 swap, but there are already a couple of those running around locally. i want something that no one else has seen or owned around here. i know the 3.4 pretty much bolts in, and the exhaust is really a miniscule part of the build. my V6 has 2 pass. side exhaust manifolds and a REAL y pipe. not that stupid cross over manifold bull***. i gained soo much bottom end when i put real exhaust on it.

if i dont swap a toy motor in here, im gonna use a 2.0 5 cyl TD engine from an audi 5000. the car its in now is 3000 pounds and it moves it fine even with a worn out slush-o-matic. i was just going to keep my 35's on it that i have, drop to a 4.30 or 4.56 final drive, and add a locker. my truck does fine now with a stock (for the most part) V6 and 4.10's has about 175 horse and 185 torque. so, if i can squeeze 200 horses out of the 2.0 with tons of boost and fuel, it should by all means outperform the V6.
