Author Topic: Increasing blowby (Read 1983 times)

It seems that lately my blowby has been increasing quite a bit, to the point that I think the pressure may be pushing oil past the main seals when at higher throttle settings. Now my engine has gotten hot on many occasions, but I am running Evans coolant which doesn't boil. Can a head gasket leak go to an oil passage instead of a water passage? I'm hoping that is the problem. The other thing is I have run about of oil. It turns out one of the swivel fittings on a hydraulic hose that went to my remote oil filter started leaking on a long trip, so I probably drove quite a while and at highway speeds while low on oil. So maybe the rings, which were new this year are screwed, or even the cylinders themselves. I haven't done a compression check yet, but it was starting on only 1 glowplug, and starts very good on 2. Still has plenty of pep on the road. Thoughts???

yea thats what i would do! compresson check! how about an oil pressure gage ? do you have one installed on that beast?maybe even a couple oil temp. gages one low and one high mounted to get double readings!
I guess anything you can add to monitor the engine would help in predetramental engine faliure!

I have an oil pressure gauge, which is how I noticed it was low. It didn't used to use any oil, and doesn't seem to just around town, only at highway speeds. Oil pressure is maybe a little under when it was rebuilt, but not terrible, maybe 40 PSI at 3k rpm when hot, maybe a little more. depends on the engine temp and air temp.

Though I haven't tested anything yet, I think I found the problem :evil: . It appears that the hose I bought to go from my air cleaner to the turbo is completely disintegrating, meaning I've been sucking in rubber bits and who knows how much dust and grit. Pisses me off!!! I think it was attacked by sulfuric acid vapors as it was only bad right by the battery. So it's like I have been running with no air filter for who knows how long. I imagine the pistons, rings and cylinder are all scratched, so I'll just keep running it like it is. Hopefully it will wear in a little and the total seal rings will start sealing a bit better again. I redid my air filter using the top rubber part that goes on one of the old VW gas FI setups. That way there is hard plastic by the battery.
