Title: How to store an IP off car?
Post by: ricosuave on June 11, 2007, 09:57:58 am
I've heard keeping it submerged in diesel, others just have it on a shelf, open to atmosphere...

Whats the best way to store it?

If you've ever seen a new pump, ever port is covered by a plastic cover of some sort.

Leaving them open to the air is probably inviting potentiol problems.

Fill it with diesel and plug every hole open to atmosphere. Should be enough.

Yup, diesel degrades over time (which is why anyone with a backup diesel generator runs the fuel thru or drains it on a regular basis).

Machinists I know tend to stay away from 3 in1 (evidently it is quite acidic due in part to the citronella added for its cleaning properties and tends to varnish over in time) so I'd probably avoid it... sewing machine oil is a great suggestion.  I suspect a good quality 10W30 would work well too.  Machine tool oil is what machine parts are archived in.. dunno how much a pint or more would cost.  Or gun oil ??

so, what about one that has been emptied and open to the air for ~1yr?  how do you all think that would fare?

I'd imagine it will leak. You may be able to run some seal conditioner through it first. I'd fill it and let it sit for a while (overnight)  before trying to turn it over

Interesting stuff, keep us posted. I got a spare 1.6 TD engine with the Jetta I just picked up and its IP & turbo still attached. God only knows when the last time it turned a rev on its own. Sitting on an engine stand right now and I'm toying with the idea of tearing it down or selling it..
