Hi guys i got a 97 IDI just wondering what your avg mileage is, this isnt a contest, or anything, im just wondering if what im getting is average or below. Ive been told both. I get 680km/ tank wich is about 50-53L fill, thats mostly city, THe thing is last summer i was getting a lot more, went from over 760/tank down to 550 this winter, now im back at 670. I even drove from calgary to van, and got over 900kms and still have 5L left. so ywah. whats your average per tank? thanks

That's poor mileage. Get rid of that gasser engine and get a Quantum TD
-
I get 40 mpg (american gallon not imperial) in summer and 38 mpg with winter fuel on my 85 Jetta 1.6 turbo diesel. Thats with a very worn out engine. I know because I pulled it recently and found 24 thousandths piston to cylinder clearance with one broken oil ring and worn out valves.
Maybe I'll get better mileage after rebuild.
I guess you have a 1.9?
-
I usually get 800km/43L but if I try can get 950-1000/43L. I've developed a mean fuel leak that I haven't been able to correct yet and have lost about 200kms/tank
I drive a mk2 TD and there is usually about 100-200 pounds of crap in the trunk
At best that works out to 55 MPG (US) I have a goal to hit 75 MPG but we will see.
Engine has 450xxx kms on it too :D
-
I pretty much hung around the 45mpg (American) mark. I got it up to 53mpg by keeping it at ~50mph during a highway round trip, and with ~1000lbs of people in the car managed to get ~38mpg during lots of holiday stop and go traffic. I figure I can break into the 70mpg range w/ ease, but going past that may take some unorthodox finagling.

I've got a 97 Jetta with the 1.9 AAZ and I get an average of 50-51 mpg (imperial).
I have stretched it to 55 mpg a few times last summer, but there was no fun in that. If I keep the engine speed down, shift below 3000rpm etc it goes up, but I've been driving it hard (shifting around 3600-4000rpm) and doing 70-75mph on the highway.

yeah i dont have a gasser, 1.9 td IDI, 260k Kms, im going to a gtg here in langley , hopefully someone can give me some pointers on my problem. I think it may be my injectors? i really have no idea. THanks guys,

with my 1.9 NA TDI (turbo is in the mail) I just got no less than 46 mpg with a mix of 55mph and lots of stoplights city driving
this is a brand new engine with a Giles pump and some of vwmike's .22mm injectors with the timing set to 1.00 mm, and the cable shifted 5 speed from a 98 beetle TDI
once this thing is broken in and turbo is on I want to squeeze 60 mpg plus out of this.

what is a giles pump?
-
It is the pump to beat all pumps, with the special treatment to make lots of power. I don't have one, but I have only heard great stuff about them. You can find him under the vendors section.
-
I ussally get around 40mpg (imperial), more on long steady runs. Not too bad for a 168k engine pulling along a heavy Passat Estate!
-
I get around 40mpg (American) on a well worn engine and a shorth 5th gear.
-
I'm only getting 40 mpg (US). I used to get around 50. But that's still almost twice as much as I'm getting with my automatic gasser.
-
the giles pump runs great on my NA TDI, but I have the Giles turbo pump and I need the turbo installed before I realize the full potential of it since the fuel is limited right now since it was calibrated for boost.
I love the 1.9 TDI I really think that to stall this thing it would require a lot of brake and then dropping the clutch, needless to say I love the torque of the 1.9

Right now I can't say for sure with all the new parts I've put on but I've put 20L (there was about 5L left in the tank) in and used 1/3rd of it and I'm at 130km so far. I estimate around 300-350km with 25L which is about 7 to 8 liters per 100km. It's 50/50 between city and highway driving.
-
i used to consistently get 40mpg while beating the *** out of my jetta
-
just an update i got way better milage on this tank, 755kms on 52L, if my math is right thats 37.75 mpg? i could be wrong.. running b40 bio...
-
755 kms on 52 litres is 42 mpg (imperial).......

755 kms on 52 litres is 42 mpg (imperial).......
POOOOOR! My gasser 'Q' will do that on a run.
Upper 40's [imp] town 2 to 3 mile runs and touching 60mpg [imp] on an interstate 65 to 75mph for my diesel 'Q'
These Golf/Jettas don't seem to be as economic as their light weight should produce IMO

I just did a test on my Jetta 90 TD 305000k
613km 46L
about 7.5L/100km, which to me seems rather crappy. I have turned down fueling as i had it up, am still not impressed.
With this tank I am going to try turning down the starwheel to see if I am getting to much fuel on boost.
I will report more then
If any one has any ideas on how to increas fuel milage that would be great.
I plan on doing a Fresh Air intake, and 2.5down pipe with 2.5 or 2.75 tail pipe here one weekend. Well that is after my new son gets out of the hospital :( and we are back home... :)
