Title: Holset HX35 ! Who has made one work on their setup
Post by: subsonic on March 26, 2007, 07:57:51 pm
What could a person do with a Holset HX35 w/a 9cm exhaust if they happened to be able to get their hands on one?    Hybrid setup possibilities? I have a stock t3 and a stock k24 to play with.  Will a Giles pump, Ported 1.9 head and Daves exhaust setup, manifold and downpipe out a 2.5" create enough flow to turn a big honk'n turbo like this?  What would you need to do to get the boost on befor the rpm's are way high? Just considering the possibilities.

Jim

Well from what Andy has reported, you will not see decent boost till 4000-4500rpm. So yes you can make it work, you just have to be willing to make some revs, and dump a ton of fuel in.

Too small for Merc, HX40 or HX50 would be enough  :D

I´m going to test a Schwitzer S2B in Scirocco, it is a bit smaller than HX35. I am also dumping TONs of fuel and revving it HIGH

Wow, that must be some Mercedes!  Can the hot side be changed to allow for faster spool?  If so, what size/ part would you reccomend?  If I use either the t3 or the k24 I think I will go past the good performance envelope of the turbo, and raise the EGT's to much. Besides the swap of the Mercedes .48 hot side, are there other options?

i think reving it high with rons of tons of feul result in a plunger failure.
a 11mm plunger can not take +5000rpm for to long.

But 12mm pump will

lots of  :?:  :?:  :?:  for me.  :P
my friend broke his 11mm plunger when he was driving 5500rpm in 5th gear for 2km.
i think named tintin was also not running very much rpm with his two 12mm plungers.

so, how much rpm do you think you can run audi80?

6000+rpm

2km at 5500rpm    Why? I can´t drive 2km at 230-240km/h anywhere :? Also this is IDI, not TDI.

I think named tintin had m-tdi... On IDI it's a bit different - you can rev higher

Yeah  definetly IDI  5500 RPM  the M-TDI  is a 1.9 remember,  much heavier internals but the pump allows for crazy fueling which is wicked sick.

well the TDI injection pressures are around 250 bar right??? IDI is only about 155 bar... you can just imagine how much stress is on the plunger at 250 bar...  way up top in the revs the stress must be so great that yes... it would shatter!  but on a lower pressure IDI there is much more potential for high rpm's.  isn't malone revving to 6000 rpm on his Giles super pump???

its a trade-off really... high rpm power or low rpm torque.  i'd personally prefer an m-TDI because high rpm just sucks back fuel... all out race applications would want high rpm though.

malone only has a 9mm pump the last time he ran his idi. I have a 12mm and i rev the snot out of min religously and i hit 5800 rpm? roughly...

My pump is locally custom made, it will rev ~6000 with full fueling

I lost an 11mm bosch pump head..over reving it..When I took it apart I noticed the plunger springs were much stronger.

A possible solution...would be to use 10mm springs on an 11mm or 12mm pump head for high reving.  It would lessen stress on the pump head and I doubt the plunger would "float"

well, the car was a Peugout 1.9TD IDI  running about 210-220km/h or so on 5500rpm with his 11mm, it did broke, i thought it was OEM Bosch plunger. after 2km it did braek into pieces, also the 2sockets on the main shaft are broken. i saw the pic's also, it broke simular to named tintin his last pump failure.
the 11mm was maxes out on the quantityscrew with a gt2256v

the springs need to be toghether with the camplate, otherwise the rollers will damage the camplate or the camplate will damage the rollers, alltough sometimes when its just a little difrence there is no problem.

@SMOKEYDUB: do you do 5800 for long periods or only in low gears?

i have done 5800 for a while but due to headgasket explosions i didnt hold it for more then a minute ( actually it was dr.diesel driving) It was in 5th around 200 ish with the diesel transmission. I should be able to go faster with a gas tranny.

btw, it was running 175bar opening pressure from the injectors (stock for this engine)
