Title: Building a Hydraulic 1.6 TD for Severe Punishment?

I just picked up an old POS Jetta TD with a 1.6 Hyd motor in it.
I am hoping to go through this motor and do a bore job, block and head cleaning and throw in all new needed internals, etc... I am very familiar with the 1.6 mechanical motors, but not so much the hydraulic ones.

If all goes well, this motor will be the donor for a wicked fun autocross car.

I gather that the mechanical motors have a bit more power potential because of more precise valve adjustment, is this just because of dilapidated lifters that nobody wants to replace?

I am eager to do a metal head gasket, and possibly load new lifters in it.

Beyond the obvious of using good quality parts, is there anything else internally I can do to prepare this motor for a serious beating?

I plan to run a modded pump for high revs, gtd nozzles, an intercooler and lots of fuel and boost, and I want this sucker to hang together for a good long time.

I guess I'm looking for a parts/mods list for a bad ass 1.6TD build

Post by: saurkraut on February 13, 2007, 08:12:22 am: When you tear into it, look at the lifter bores. You might be able to run solid lifters in the hydro head.

I have a new 1.9 hydro head. The oil ports for the hydro lifters are in the side of the bore more than half way up the bore. The lifter bores look to be the same diameter. I'll be doing some measurements this weekend between the 1.6 mech head and the 1.9 hydro head to see what might work.

My intension is to convert this head to a mechanical head and put it on my 1.6 mechanical motor for the bigger ports and lower compression ratio. this moter is in my summer rabbit, so i cold starting should not be an issue

my proof came from a fully loaded car getting up to speed as if it were fully empty... with my current car i had it half loaded, and it was super sluggish... now that could always be due to bad lifters and bad injectors etc... but my old car wasn't really a prize either :lol:

yea i totally forgot about those... they will certainly open up the little diesel, and decrease turbo spool times by quite a lot :)

Did you mean 1.9 headgaskets? I just found out I can get those too!

If you meant lifters.. I have them next day, then they go out to you..

Studs and rings? None of my guys get that.. I might be able to explore it with a racing wholesaler.

Otherwise, I think you're looking for a jegs or summit race shop :)

The 1.9 AAZ headgaskets aren't exactly cheap. 35 before shipping. I'm a shipping cost only kinda guy, so that shouldn't add a whole bunch.... I think my wholesaler must be importing them and paying provincial tax..

Should I make a post in FS / WTB ?

Off topic a bit.. Since I've been selling the crap out of TD parts, I've been thinking of doing an online website store with all this stuff in to for easy access.. any thoughts on that? I hate ebay cause they stiff me with charges, and it doesn't get me the traffic I like, I'd rather deal with hardcore nuts like y'all.. :) Any thoughts either way?
