The pyro won't be any cheap.
Most go for around 200 usd.
The best place to put it?
My guess is pre-turbo, even though it's a PITA to put there (you'll have to practically remove the manifold to do a ok job), but it's more accurate than post turbo.
If you put it post turbo and know the difference in temps from pre turbo, then you're all set. :wink:

Autometer makes all kinds of gauges in all kinds of styles. I just got a Autometer Cobalt EGT gauge and it cost me $264.37Can. Kinda hurt the wallet but is a good investment if you want great looks and reliability. :twisted: Check them out http://www.autometer.com/

The Autometer kits (that come with the thermocouple) are a good value. I've got one in my car as well; the thermocouple seems to respond fairly quickly. Can't attest to it's accuracy though - I installed it RIGHT at the manifold/turbo junction (in the threaded boss for the support bracket) so hopefully it should be reasonably respresentative.
VwPodRacer - that's a decent price; I can usually do them for ~250 CDN taxes in.

I paid about U$ 110 for my Autometer Cobalt, and it reads at least 50 below ambient when decellerating. I'll see what tech support says Monday.
Aircraft surplus guages are quite cheap on Ebay, I'm kinda wishing I'd gone that route although the Autometer is cute and fuzzy, I'm not sure it is good for much.

it appears that egauges.com has pyrometers for cheap, but most of them do not include the thermocouple, but the thermocouple is available from there site, i think someone could end up with only 110 into brand new gauge from that site, excluding shipping charges

I forget what I have, it's in a box right now but I did run it in my 84 TD a Aviation EGT gauge, it was temperature compensated and vibrations would not effect it. total I think I paid $85 for everything shipped

I don't know the exact cost of my EGT since i bought it with the probe and a boost gauge. I got ISSPRO components from a local Diesel tuning shop for $170 for the pair. See my pictures under NON-VW Diesel

I just ordered a cheapie on ebay... I figure at the very least it will allow me to see when temperature spikes.
Quick question though... Haven't recieved it yet and they say it needs 1/8" PT thread hole in the manifold. Seems aweful small, can that be right?

The 1/8" PT fitting is a plumbing fitting. The 1/8" refers to the inside diameter, not the outside. If yo go to a parts store they should have the tap and the correct drill size. That is where I got mine.

hmm... I was able to find NPT but not PT. I've never even heard of PT before... could it be the same?

Typically, as soon as I post a question I find the answer myself:
"PT, NPT, FPT acronyms have the same meaning for American National Standard Pipe Threads. Female NPT threads can be designated as FPT and male NPT threads can be designated as MPT."
