Post by: mainer on October 08, 2004, 04:16:08 pm

I've seen a few Quantum TD's. But they were all 4 cylinder TD engines. I've never seen a 5 cylinder TD in a VW.

Racer_x is correct. The 5-cyl TD never came in the Quantum in the USA. The Quantum came with 1.7 and 1.8 liter 4-cyl gas engines, the 4-cyl 1.6 TD, and the 2.2 liter 5-cyl gas engines, but never a 5-cyl TD.

Also, the Quantum is not an Audi 5000. It is an Audi 4000.

AFAIK, only the Audi 5000 got the 5-cyl IDI TD engine.  The VW Quantum and the Audi 4000 got the longitudinal-mounted 4-cyl 1.6lTD motor, while the transverse-mounted 1.6lTD was found in VW Rabbits and Jettas.  VW/Audi built a 6-cyl IDI Diesel (with a TD option) that they OEM'ed for some 80's Volvo models.

thats my new project, putting a 5cyl td in a quantum syncro wagon...i'll have to let you guys know how it goes together... now i need to find a bigger plunger for the 5cyl pump....i had thought about the volvo /vw 6 cyl td but i heard it had oiling issues and besides the quantum already was made for a 5 cyl so less fabbing.
thanks

Cool, Deo...that sounds like a terrific project! :!:

A fifth cylinder will really wake up the Q-ship, which is a good driving car already, but the 1.6TD lacks umph. 8)

the bigger plunger that you can find is the 2.5tdi eurovan's engine.
is a 11mm one.you can go to 12 or 14mm but it will be special part at very high price!
if you need help for something about this tell me!
i am working on a 2.5tdi with mechanical pump.
