I just got my 84 NA diesel rabbit on the road last week and took it on a trip from north bay to toronto and back. I took my girlfriend so we had a fair amount of luggage. I added some fuel conditioner stuff to the car before I left and I ended up averaging 47 MPG. How can I get this over 50? I know that less wieght will help, but most of my trips will be with someone or lots of parts anyways.
I just replaced the fuel filter (added ATF), oil/filter change. I have a 4 speed 4A tranny. I can't find any info on the ratios for it so I'm not sure if a 5 speed would actually be benieficial or not.
My average speed for the trip was 110km/h and I had no problems climbing the big hills north of toronto (I didn't need to downshift and I actually passed a fair amount of cars going up the hill)
My fuelling screw is turned down and the car does not smoke unless I'm in third at 90km/h.
I got the car up to 130km/h and it was willing to go faster but I can't afford a ticket so I slowed back down.
So what can I tinker with to get some more mpgs?
-
maybe your brakes are dragging a bit? you should also have your injectors checked for leaking. i have a 1.9td and i drive 140kmh on the highway and i still get 56mpg

56 mpg going 140 km/h with the 1.9? ummm... where can I get one like yours?
-
oops 52mpg, 70L, 1300 and some km all highway, montreal to truro nonstop and i hardly went under 130..
-
going from kamloops to vancouver, means crossing the cascade mountains, i managed 48.5 mpg mostly going 120km/h. lots of hills and such. I just figured that the less boost i make the better my mpg will be.
-
So I can definitly do better then. Would rebuilt injectors and resetting the timing help? Is there a "best MPG" setting for the pump timing or is it hit and miss or factory spec?
What about a 4:2:1 exhaust manifold or free flowing exhaust?
-
i would get those injectors and the timing checked out, my uncle has a 91 golf with a rebuilt 1.6 n/a and he gets like between 65-70mpg on the highway
-
Get the injectors done first, then set injection timing to 1.00 or even 1.10mm, remove the muffler and run a free flow resonator only, that should net you 60mpg or better. I was getting 1400kms on my 87 Jetta diesel this way at 100km/h loaded heavily.Think steady state cruising...

Also on that old beast adjust the vavles!
-
Thanks for the pointers, I'll give them all a try

What sorts of rpms are we talking about at 120 and 140 km/h?
I'm curious what you guys are cruising at and how that effects the efficiency.
Cheers,
Tom

at 120km/h its ~3000rpm
-
question, i have my fuel turned up, no smoke at cruising in 5th. Boost is runnign 20psi, when i'm crusing its about 10psi-15psi depending on how high above 100kmph i am. Will i get better milage if i run less boost?
-
^ thats what im thinking is the case, one time coming back from vancouiver i was doing 150-170km/h the entire time (shhhhh) and well i got 34 mpg that time, and basically running 9psi the entire time.
But the other week when i went easy, 110-120km/h and keeping an eye on the boost gauge and trying not to create much boost i got 48.5 mpg. so thats what im stickin with right now, plus im sure the rpm's have something to do with it.
-
My best so far is 64 mpg and worst in the low 50's.
The car is not aligned and I will get my cruise control later today. :D
House of diesel, 1400km with a 87 Jetta...you impress me.
I told the guys on another forum that I'll see 1500 km with one tank before the end of this summer, I believe it's realistic.
The car is a 1992 jetta with a rebuilt 1985 1.6D.
I've got to go fill up today, so we'll see how I manage this time (1111 km and just off the quarter tank).

Rammstein, what tranny ( gearing do you have? )
Mine : AWY 3600+ rpm at 120 km / hour

In theory, yes. You really only want boost when you require additional power from the engine ie: passing, hill climbing, accelerating onto the highway etc.
-
thats where the magic comes in
-
there is an adjustment on the front of my pump that i had changed by mistake. It seems to adjust how much boost you get proportional to pedal depression, i'll take some pics later.

You want to have a trans with highway gearing, that is for sure, AWY is a useless trans....try a ACN, 4S, AUG, AGS, lots of highway trans out there. I had an AGS with my 87, I would regularily get 1000kms a tank in the dead of winter in the Laurentians driving less then 10 minutes to the ski hill (work) two tanks all winter, then in the summer I got 1200-1400 kms commuting back roads. Sunoco Gold was worth about 100kms a tank too.
I find the better the diesel runs the better the mileage, even when it comes to adding more fuel the economy goes up and up, kinda the reverse of gas motors! My 1.6 non turbo was out running most turbo diesels on the road, especially over 100km/h. (unless that turbo was properly tuned that is). Throttle response was amazing...
Coming soon an AWY equipped 92 Jetta diesel (non turbo) with SMOG GTD nozzles and tuning/exhaust, I think first gear will be useless once tuned...I am building it up for a client to tow with.

And flat out cruising back roads (145-160km/h depending on hills) controling the local mosquito population I was still getting over 1000kms a tank...

Mine : AWY 3600+ rpm at 120 km / hour
I've got a AUG, 3000 rpm at 92 kph...
That's the speed I'm going at also. :D
Last tank:4.73 l/100 km and 1223.1 km.
That's 60 mpg in Imperial gallons (50 US mpg).
Houseof D, I think any tranny with a 3.67 final drive and a .71 5th gear would be better than what I have.
Mine is supposed to be 3.67 and .89 fifth, maybe the speedo cable is wrong.
A .71 would give around 2500 rpm at 100 kph.
I just got my cruise control, got to put it in, that it'll be fun... :D
Got to change ball joints, tie-rod ends, wheel bearing and such before alignment, the car pulls a little bit to the right.

This topic interests me greatly.
I just got a 94 golf 1.9 td 5spd and I am not impressed w/the mileage I'm getting. I thought it'd be better than my 91 1.6 na 5spd and it''s not. I've run one and a half tanks of fuel so far and I'm not even getting 800K to a tank and I beleive it's a bigger tank. Now I'll be honest This is my 1st turbo diesel and I've been "trying it" over the last week and a a bit but nothing too crazy.
THat being said, I'm usually crusing on the hwy at 120km/h. I drove my 1.6 na between 130 and 140 and I got the same mileage as I'm getting now.
Now for the loaded question....Where do I start???? I need this thing to get above 50 mpg .
You guys have been so good to me since I became a vw owner a year ago and now I'm on my 2nd so I really hope the support continues cause I'm not happy at all with the mileage on this car. :x
Out!

Another thing I should mention is my cold start or timing advance does not work. The handle pulls in and out but nothing moves behind the pump and there's no change in the RPM's. I currently idol at 1000. This is too high. i think it's supposed to be around 8oo and change if I recall. ANy advice is greatly appreciated.
Just saw house of diesel chiming in. Check PM
Out.

Your pump probably just has the timing advance, and the idle boost is done with a vacuum solenoid. You will not really see any RPM change with the cold start lever, especially if your idle is high.
