Title: Intercooler ideas and pictures
Post by: sethyboy85 on May 28, 2006, 03:43:48 pm
I need some ideas on Intercooling my A2, I would rather install a Intercooler than worry about refilling the water jug for a water injection system. I just was wondering if anybody had a IC installed and woulnd't mind posting a picture.

thanks.

post youre engine bay pls.
If you can make it youreself, you maybe can use a water to air IC.

Anyway, if you use waterinjection, i still would use a w/aIC ore a FMIC becouse you got less turbolag.

So many curves, man!
Probably it had to be that way, huh

ya especially because its 2.5 inch piping.but i dont think the curves would effect it enough at all to worry about it.

1.8T IC (mk4) in a 1.9td 1995

here are some (big) pictures

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/bareil76/IMG_0386.jpg

We can see on the next pictures that the exit is going toward the front of the car instead of the back (as it would do if the IC was on the passenger side)  This is no big deal since, as a gift, we did'nt need to cut the protector under the car.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/bareil76/IMG_0388.jpg

we cut a small piece of metal just to avoid contact between the intercooler and the bumper.

beautiful job. Im not sure what the rad is from passat maybe? and the rad fan i cant find one small enough still on the look out. i had to modify the lower part of the rad support alot and make up brackets for the ic and the rad to sit on. I thought it was too much work but in the end i found out it works awesome so im happy. still not completly done the project i just needed to drive something to work. So now im still driving with an open 2.5 inch down pipe    its to loud but it works im getting the exhaust on it tomorrow. 2.5 inch straight pipe.

hey I have the turbo lined up  1 1/2" above the factory toilet bowl and that is it.

engine bay is starting to get dirty after 1,500 miles but I am waiting on my DP from passenger performance and then I am getting a 2.5" exhaust fabbed up either by me or a local guy who does good work.

oh yeah keep the pictures coming... I am thinking I will have to go with a smaller radiator and am trying to figure out if I can use a volvo IC (one of many various IC I have) and then make something so all the air is forced through the AC/IC/rad and block off all other air passage ways in the engine bay, put a slim high CFM fan on and set it on a manual thermostat to kick on whenever the coolant hits a certain temperature.

Just change your moniter to 1280x1024 and the pictures will get smaller ;)

Hay Hey, how about resizing those pictures so we don't have to scroll for 1/4 mile to read this thread.

Andrew

PS It takes me about 17 seconds to scroll a 1/4 mile.

done!!

It was much faster to just post them with a url link

Mine, Believed to be from a Ford Focus TDCi, battery needed moving back 1 inch but the radiator bolts straight back in on original mounts.

^ email em to lee_greenough at canada dot com and I will put em up (but maybe not 'till monday.

I am particularly interested in shots of the shrouds and mounting....I aquired a GTD cooler and hoses, but none of the mounting stuff, so I am going to make it out of cardboard then 'glass it.

Has anyone tried a hood mounted IC?  I was thinking kinda like a Subaru with a hood scoop. I was thinking it would be a shorter tube and therefor less turbo lag.    Plus, I like hood scoops.

Original GTD Setup
(http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/a19vuu-gtd/gtdbay.jpg)
Was poor as suffered from "Heat Soak" from engine

Current setup off a Rover 620 SDi

Though I now have a Rover 220 SDi one to fit which is in far better condition.

I'm fitting this next, so far I have just trial fitted it.

Its an old Volvo intercooler. I had to grind the front of the lower radiator support to get it to fit and I'm going to have to fit the battery in the boot or a smaller battery so I can route the intercooler outlet pipe.
