Title: oil cooler question.

On the turbo diesel 1.6 on the oil filter housing they have a oil heater? Would it be effective to loop those 2 lines and run a seperate pump and pump it through a cooler up front? has anyone done this yet?

IMO the most effective thing you can do with VWs heat exchanger is move it to the trash.
It takes under 3 minutes to piss all your oil out the seam
or maybe it gets oil in your water.
or maybe the coolant hose pops.  VW says replace it with a new $370 form them unit every time you work on the engine because it is no good.

I'm running a bypass adapter thing that replaces the heat exchanger.My cooler is mounted where an A3 TDI intercooler would be.

Setrab coolers are the bomb.  Bit pricey though.  I'm good friends with the USA rep for Setrab, I might be able to get a deal together.  They have some really impressive intercoolers as well, including a very old-school water-to-air unit that was a prototype for an early turbo kit for the rabbits.  If anyone is interested, I can persue this a little more and get some kit pricing together.

   If you are on a budget you can get very near the same thing from a Volvo 240 gasser turbo, I thiink the thermostat in thoes is 190 F though, IIRC. The  lines are about 2 feet long, IIRC. I'm pretty sure the oil filters are the same diameter.

I am using one form a 740 Volvo gas turbo..  
thermostat says 100C.
The colored Oring from the dealer is supposed to be best, it was about$8 and green if I remember right.
Get the spin on pipe from the donor car, or you will have to buy an expensive tap like I did.  Saab rubber cooler lines bolted on in place of the original hardlines, and have banjos on the cooler end.  I had to get the rubber replaced at a hydraulic shop though.

one good thing about the factory cooler,is it helps the oil come up to temp qwicker,,,very critical for a turbo,,keep it on there,and add an aux cooler

  That's a little on the hot side, I wonder if the 240 really was 190* F (according to bently) or if it was a different part, or if I just remembered it wrong...

  That's a little on the hot side (212* F), I wonder if the 240 really was 190* F (according to bently) or if it was a different part, or if I just remembered it wrong...

yeah the only thing keeping it from boiling over would be the anti freeze...

Actually, the stock ones are great for stock motors, the better ones for modded motors is the stock cooler on the 04-05 passat 2.0 TDI's. It's twice as big and like hillfolk'r said, not only will it keep your oil cool, it'll warm up your oil quicker and more importantly, it'll keep it at a stable temp.

IMHO VW aren't stupid.
Those coolers/warmers are fitted to a hell of a lot of cars and have been for a good few years now. If they were that bad they wouldn't have used them for such a long time. This is ofcourse for stock applications.
If your pepping things up a little then fit an auxilliary oil cooler but keep the warmer too as said it reduces the difference in coolant and oil temperatures.

  Thoes have the same 100*C opening temp for the thermostat like the volvo unit, fwiw.
