Title: Starter install problem

I attempted to install the starter back onto my 84 TD motor, with a 020 5 speed transmission(unknown year), and the starter is from my 82 Rabbit with an 020 4spd. When I attempted to put the starter on today I noticed it kept hitting the flywheel and would not sinch up to the bell housing properly? Are there different starters for the different model years? is it possible I am missing a spacer between the bellhousing and the transmission or the starter and the bell housing? or is it possible the flywheel is not mounted properly and set back to far?
