Title: School me on this Valve Spring Compressor

This may be a stupid question, but I am still learning  :-[

Does this valve spring compressor look like it can be used with the head on the block?

As well, what exactly is the plate portion for?

Any information would be most welcomed.

plate is to bolt the gasser 5 banger head down too.. will not work with diesel as the square blocks ment for gasser combustion chamber to hold the vlaves shut... i use flat one with a rag tucked in on a gasser...

Yes, it looks like it can be used with the head on the block.  Make sure your piston is at TDC before pulling the keepers.

what you do on the plate... its got value with this mod..

bolt a 4 cylender gasser head toit.. uses the exhaust studs right now... for location... mark it and tap 2 11x?? head bolt holes into it...

then wack off the pieces that hold it in place via the studs.. headbolts much more simple...

now on the bottom "flat side" is a tab hanging off to hod said head in a vice... wack it off...

get a piece of thick beefy bar stock.. drill it for say 2 8mm bolts.. then drill matching holes in that plate and tap for the 8mm bolts...

now your plate can do diesel stuff on the flat side.. just flip that piece of bar stock to the other side if you need to do a gasser one...

if i did not have access to one.. id ask how much... not a common tool... but very nice to have...

I think Libby means that EVERY cylinder you do needs to be at TDC. So follow the same procedure for determining the valve clearance gap between the cam lobe and the top of the follower.  That should keep you straight.  And keep you from loosing the valves.

if piston not at tdc... how does it hold valve up to release? and if you compress air the bore.. i tend to bdc

you could also use the rope trick where you fill the cylinder with a small nylon rope through the spark plug hole to keep the valve up in place. Or use compressed air fed also through the spark plug hole to keep the valve up. Just another option verses making each piston be at tdc. not saying they are better.

That tab you want to hack off the back side it to be gripped in a vise to hold the whole contraption while you work on the head. Its pretty handy. I have one for 4 bangers, but it mostly gets used in the car.

p toby it is.. why you put piece of thick larger one that bolts to it so you can have a flat side and gasser side...

headbolts so it can be bolted down very loose so you can install cam/adj valves at the vice.. only time it has to be snug to head is valve sprigs...

the one i use sits with the tools i use for cutting valves and seats... one day i inherit it all..
