Title: Injection pump timing number continues to come up wrong.
Post by: shwak23 on March 13, 2013, 07:05:11 pm
I keep getting .44 on my timing gauge. What could the cause of this be?
If I adjust the timing a single tooth in either direction the injection pump lock no longer fits properly.... wtf?
1.6 na.

You are turning the IP....?  (The pulley shouldn't move.)

YUP.

I do believe he is turning the pulley in relation to try and get more swing out of it.

OP, you've got a metric gauge. Time it to .39-.40 and be happy

For reals? I am dumbs.

At least my shame will forever be immortalized. Here on vwdiesel.net.

Wait no. I am second guessing myself but I don't think that is the case.
My gauge is a Mitutoyo digital gauge that clearly says mm at the bottom right.
However as I type this I see that my cold start is pulled. Let me try again without that noob mistake.

Well 0.44mm would be extremely low timing! Half of what the lowest book timing is in fact. Would never run.. If it were in fact that low of a reading, turning the pump would make it right.

Well I forgot about this thread but it turned out that the previous owner had marked TDC incorrectly on the fly wheel. Upon finding and using the correct mark everything turned out just fine.

Believe I drove mine on the magic "oops-I-didn't-know-Prothe-sells-American-gauges" setting of .0011 for THREE DAYS.  I had just got the car; first diesel.  I thought the motor was real worn out, and I had the pump off for some reason.. glow plugs or something i dont' remember, but it was my first ever attempt at timing the injection pump with my shiny new second hand Prothe dial indicator. God was it hard to get that thing started. (I thought it was air in the lines!)   Believe it misfired once every 15-20 seconds, horrible white smoke.  Common sense eventually set in, and I googled ".0011 inches to mm" and found i was really only at .28mm, not 1.1mm like i had thought.

But if you rock a white helmet hard enough, you can get one started at less than half the setting.
