Title: Steel Flywheel (not cast iron) - do they exist for 1.5 diesel bottom ends?

I need a steel flywheel for my land speed record attempt.  The rules require a steel flywheel.  OEM cast iron flywheels do not meet the rules.

Are "gasser" VW flywheels the same as the diesel models, in terms of balance and bolt patterns?

I can find commercially available steel flywheels for gassers, but can't confirm whether or not they will work on a 1.5L diesel crank.

I don't know if 1.5 and 1.6 diesel flywheels are interchangeable?  I do know that on my 1.6N/A, I upgraded my flywheel from the 190mm to a 210mm lightened gasser flywheel, this was on my 4A transmission.  You have to also use the appropriate pressure plate for that flywheel, meaning 190mm for the 190mm and the 210mm for the 210mm.  Also, keep in mind the timing marks on the flywheel will be different.  I had to remark my gasser flywheel timing mark for TDC for the diesel motor.

1.5 and 1.6 have the same crank bolt pattern as all gasser 4 bangers..

you will probably need to change over to a 210mm clutch, and 9 bolt pressure plate tho..

you dont need to change the timing mark, unless its a flywheel with no TDC, and just a 6* timing mark (my digifant flywheel only had a 6* mark)

Good information all around.  I'm going to contact Black Forest Industries to ask about the timing marks on their steel flywheels.

I bought a clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel setup from a forum member a while back.  I "think" it might be a 210 mm, but I'll need to check it when I get home tonight.

Good news, my records from the purchase indicate that it's a 210 mm setup.

the TDC mark is all you have to worry about.. and TDC is the same on ALL EA811 VW engines..

im sure their steel flywheels come with LOTS of timing marks.. im sure one of them will be the TDC mark..

there is no difference between TDC on a diesel, and TDC on a gas..

i have a16v flywheel and pressure plate on my diesel, and everything worked out just fine.. dont worry about the people saying that the timing marks are different, because TDC is TDC, no matter what..

Yup! Unless it is some cheap ebay flywheel (whicg it isnt lol) you don't have to worry.

TDC is TDC for all the VW 4 cyl engines.
