Title: So I lost 5th gear tonight,
Post by: Turbofan on October 18, 2012, 08:28:55 pm
On the way down to brew night at a friends house. There I was, cruising down 95, then nothing. I knocked it back into 4th and finished my ride. Sounds like a common enough problem, and that the gear just came loose. My question is, should I need to replace 5th, is there something taller that will fit?
I drive an '86 Golf, with a turned up IP and a non stock vnt, so I'm not afraid of gear height . Thanks all, hope your motoring adventures aren't including the unfortunate sound of whirring unconnected gears.

A .71 gear is the tallest offered.

The bottom of your bell housing has a code on it. Match it up the the list linked below to know what you already have in your transmission. If you already have a .71 you can't go any taller for fifth gear.

Looks like I have an .75, though I took a peak at my junk collection and it looks like I have an old 4sp that has a .71 4th gear. What are the chances it'll fit?

it wont fit..

4th gear doesnt work as a 5th..

the difference between a .75 and .71 is about 25 rpms, so not really enough to justify the change..
