Title: Quick little cylinder head question
Post by: Turbofan on May 26, 2012, 07:53:39 am
With summer here, I decided to drive my car to the shop so I could fix the various oil leaks I have at my gf's request. I knew my oil drain bung for my turbo was leaking and needed a little welding love and I knew my head gasket had been gently weeping as well ever since I put the VNT on it. I also discovered I bent my custom motor mount when changing my clutch a couple months ago (damn MK2's with VNT's). No big deal with those though. I expected to see cracks in between my valves, as a couple months after my initial turbo install a couple years ago, I noticed a severe decrease in power (I thought that would have been cracks in between the valves and/or HG problems). When I actually pulled the head off, initially it looked good, way better than I expected even. No cracks, BUT it looks like the head near the prechamber holes looks a little cooked (all of 'em), as in the pitted aluminum look. Almost like an aluminum zit. I've never pulled one of these heads before, so I didn't know if this was normal or not. I searched and found another thread mentioning this, but the diagnosis seemed inconclusive. I did a image search last night and it looked like all the "new" heads I found were nice and smooth on the mating surface, which mine is not.
I know, I know, a picture is worth a thousand words, but my phone takes really crappy pictures and I didn't have my camera on me.

When I put this back together, my plan is to do the ARP/ metal HG thing. I'm also planning on pulling out my cam plate which I think is a 1.9 (PN 1 466 440 426) and put my 1.6 cam back in; I can't do better than 42 mpg's ( I know that's a go pedal problem). I can finally install that EGT probe that's been sitting on the shelf for awhile now, free up my turbo vanes and maybe gov mod this piece too. Quick and little question, right? ;)

i think its an issue with too much fuel, when my 1.6td head cracked, it was in cylinder 3, the piston from number 3 had a much larger and discolored injection pattern on it, and the head was pitted, in my case i think the injector was leaking or just putting in too much fuel.
