How many km's?

What's the body like; when were the plugs/t-belt done last?

maybe the shifter linkage is breaking because hes driving it too hard? shifting too hard? bad motor/transmission mounts???  How can the linkage break so often?

Lots of old VW's I've driven have very vague shifters because of worn bushings.  You've got to use The Force, not just force.  Maybe he's not a finesse type of guy and thinks he can find gears better by jamming it....

Sounds like a good deal if there's nothing else weird wrong with it.

naw, linkage is easy to install.  you can take the whole thing apart and put it back together again with basic hand tools.
