I have a GT1749VA turbo that is seperate from the manifold. It came off a european Passat I believe. I am looking to put it on my MK1 but the problem is that it is clocked wrong. I dont have the proper AFN exhaust manifold for it, I have a MK3 GT15 turbo manifold. The flange will work but it positions the turbo so the oil fittings on the turbo are at like 45 degrees not straight up and down. I was able to clock the compressor side to point in the right direction but the exhaust side doesnt move so I cant get the drains right. Is there a way to clock the exhaust side or is it easier to just pick up the AFN manifold? Thanks.

I had to clock the hot and cold side of my BV39. It was tricky because I was told it could not be done as they do not come apart ::) - and no-one was willing to share any info.
More people have experience of the 1749, so it should be possible or at least the knowledge available.
I think I'd look for the manifold though.

buying the manifold will be easier than re-clocking.
you have to re-clock the vane portion as well as the center section. and there are no extra holes to re-clock the vane section..

those vanes are evenly spaced tho, so you can just rotate the controller ring to the right position for the vane actuator lever.
the vanes on a VNT15 are NOT evenly spaced, and the controller ring only fits on the vanes on one way. you MUST re-clock the whole vane assembly, not just the alignment pin like that build thread. if you move only the controller ring, and not the vane assembly, the vane movement will be limited, and some vanes will be opened/closed more than others..
you need to drill new holes for the vane assembly, then match up the pins position also, and drill a new hole for it also..
its not as straight forward and direct as that build thread that Keaton linked you to..
Regcheeseman has re-clocked a BV39 turbo, its basically a KKK version of the VNT15. all layed out the same. he knows how to do it, so listen to what he has to say.

Thanks guys for all the input, I think Im just gonna look for the mani, sounds a lot easier. Im probably just going to run the vanes open though anyway.

still need to re-clock the vanes for them to even work right. they will not even work right in the full open position if they have not been re-clocked the same amount of degrees as the center section..

Im not going to need to clock the exhaust side I dont think if I get the AFN manifold. Only the compressor side.

So as long as I dont touch the exhaust side and just bolt it up to the AFN manifold, the vanes shouldnt need to be re-clocked correct? What kind of boost pressure should I expect if I just leave them open and dont do any mechanical control?

I'm running vanes open at the moment - it's rubbish.
I'll take that back, I had a sizeable boost leak, now it's sealed it's blooming good, boost still comes in pretty low in the rev range. Should be ace when it's working properly.

my vanes are open, my car FLIES.. boost comes on strong, and LOW.. ~18psi boost if i hold it WOT..

apparently tho, i am an anomaly of the forum.. nobody else seems to get the same, or even similar performance as to what im getting..
