Title: cat question
Post by: rwdriver on July 06, 2011, 09:37:41 pm
I am currently running just a 2.5" downpipe on my car(the Mule), and it's wayy too loud. sounds like a friggin transport truck.  I have a cat lying around, and I was wondering if I could just put that on there to quiet it down. pros? cons?  Does it make the exhaust smell bad and can it get clogged with soot? (my car smokes A LOT).  is a cat more restrictive than a muffler?  thanks

yes, it will quiet it down.
yes, it will make it smell bad.
yes, it will get clogged with soot if your car smokes THAT much.
yes, a cat is WAY more restrictive than a muffler.

sell that cat for a few bucks, and buy a real muffler.

I've bought a junkyard muffler for $7. And I think you can get a real cheap universal muffler from Pep Boys or it's Canadian equivalent for around $30.

The local scrapyards are paying good money for cats these days, you might come out money ahead.

edit: someone told me cheap stainless steel universal mufflers can be found on ebay
