Title: Wanting to put a AAZ or TDI into Mk1 - what are challenges and possibilities?
Post by: SR Heer on May 24, 2011, 02:36:51 pm
I am thinking of putting either an AAZ or mTDI/CTN drive train into my 81 Caddy.

My main concern is about space - is there enough space in the eng bay to hangle the 1.9s -

How much heavier are these motors and will I need to get heavy duty front struts/springs for this? any suggestions as to where I might get if so -

Since the TDs run hotter than the 1.6Ds I will need an inter-cooler but I do not see much room for one there in Mk1 - maybe a water cooled inter-cooler would work - any recommendations?  I am thinking that maybe the alternator and AC compressor might ride up against the front grill frame or hood - does anyone know what I might have trouble with in getting these to fit and function properly?

I was wondering if I could use the 1.6D bracketing bolted onto the 1.9s and maybe use the 1.6D timing belt to have everything fit into place - except I have heard that the 1.9s are taller blocks - so that may not work - does anyone know???

Also thinking about the exhaust - using the k14 on 1.9TD - will there be room for down pipe to clear and then even if I add Mk1 power steering actuator using the 1.9TD pump to run - has anyone tried?

With the 1.9s I could go either V belt system or serpentine - I hear the V belt does not stress the crank nose gear like the serpentine system so for that I would definitely modify crank so as to use the TDI nose crank pulley.

Thanks for your time!

Stephen

I have done tdi into cabriolet(mk1). Its not bad. Size wise no problem. Mounts easy if you go 020 trans, a little tougher if you go 02a/j style. Wiring isn't that bad, do it the easy way and rewire car to fit ce2, i did the other way and would never do that again. I went FMIC between rad and grill. I deleted a/c and ps but i do run a serp system with a clutched alt. You can do a/c and ps but its an mk1 do you really need ps?i'd rather use my power for fun. A/c maybe depending where you live. Some good threads on Vortex believe it or not. Mr dave did a alh tdi with 020 into a caddy, lagamorpgh did a tdi into mk1, tongboy, there are others it has been really discussed pretty heavily on tdi club and vortex even a smidge here if you search. Folks like g60 can be a wealth of information for swaps like this, his posts on tdi can get you through many pitfalls you may encounter. An aaz ito mk1 is def easier but i have no personal experience with that one---YET.
