Title: 1.7 KY engines?
Post by: wil892 on May 17, 2011, 05:39:45 am
Hi

I had some pretty bad compression results recently, currently looking at my options. I have decided to stay IDI and would also like to stick to the 1.6 GTD engine, but I know of a 1.7D engine for sale code KY, which has been rebuilt recently.
Firstly as far as I can tell, this engine has the bore of a 1.9 with the stroke of a 1.6. Ideal I think?
Secondly, being a transporter only engine will it be suitable for a turbo, it has piston squirters I think
And thirdly, will it rev like the 1.6? I love the 1.6 because of it's responsivness and revvy nature, is the 1.7 built like a 1.9 with a heaver crank and rods or will it have similar attributes of the 1.6?
oh also are they hydraulic or solid, ideally want hydraulic for simplicity.

I intend to get a Giles pump depending on the engine price and use everything from the GTD, including watercooled turbo.

its an industrial diesel.. may have never been installed in a car. lots of gen sets and that sort of thing use them. they are in between a 1.6 and a 1.9. not like an exact cross match tho. no taking 1.7 pieces and making strokers out of AAZ blocks and 1.6 pistons.

i believe they are all solid lifter engines. possibly fitted with piston coolers.

i can tell the difference between a 1.5 and a 1.6, so i dont see the 1.7 being special, im sure it feels a bit closer to an AAZ than a standard 1.6. its still going to have no problem turning 5800, or whenever the rollers in the pump start skipping..

ok, this engine was installed in a transporter for 30k since it was bought rebuilt. Described as a "green" engine, not sure what that means. It looks to have a topline cylinder head on it.
Bit annoying it might or might not have oil squirters. Are they difficult to drill and install?

Anyone got any opinions on which engine I should go for?
Currently got three options and have no idea what to do
1) Get the 1.7 and use all the GTD equipment (may have to make oil squirters, crank out job?)
2) Rebuild spare hydraulic 1.6 block I have
3) Re-ring current engine in car (prefered but may not work)

My main concern about number 3 is finding the bores are out of spec when i take the head off. Though I kind of think they won't be as I could still clearly see the cross hatch when I had the head off 15k miles ago. And there was no ridge at all at the top of the cylinder. I expect the compression results are due to gummed up rings, as the pistons had quite a lot of crud on the top of them.

Thanks
Will

for oil squirter install, you pull the engine completely apart, like as far apart as you can. then you bring it to the machine shop. you cant do it yourself unless you have the steadiest hands on earth, and some precision drills lol..

1.8T squirters are easier to add to an engine than the regular diesel/16v squirters. the 1.8T squirters simply use a banjo bolt to hold them in, no separate bore and screw hole..

you dont NEED oil squirters to run a turbo engine. i would say that you can run without just fine as long as you arent expecting big power for long periods of time..

its easier and cheaper to buy an engine thats already together.  i wouldn't worry about the squirters, also td squirters only squirt at certain rpms based on oil pressure, i don't know that i would use squirters from another engine.

1.8T squirters have a check valve in the banjo bolt that only opens at a certain pressure. its not like they are spraying all the time..

the 1.8T squirters should work just fine. the 1.8t has a turbo too, so they wont starve the turbo. and it has a WHOLE BUNCH of hydraulic lifters, if they work on a 1.8T, they should work great on a diesel..

let me re-phrase that, ALL vw piston cooler jets have a check ball in them. its so they dont spray at idle, or when its not necessary.

New pistons for the KY block have oil squirter reliefs cut in them,..
I think it has squirters,... because pushing a van up a long hill can represent:
"big power for long periods of time..".

 I put the 1.7 pistons in a 1.6 block,.. 80mm accross.
Has plenty of power, I stuck a good used clutch in it just to get it going,..
but it slips in 4th at 7psi. that's when power really seems to start kicking in so it's hard to tell how much power it really has.

 I vote for KY block.
Sooo if the 1.6 walls prove to be too thin after removing 2.5mm more than the 3rd oversize,
Are industrial KY blocks available? Common?

they never came with big power.. i am talking about power levels above stock. like 130+ hp.. (twice the stock level or more)

I found the 1.7 more happy to rev than a 1.6. even with the semi modified pump it would spin to 5500

yes i know, but i believe they open at different pressures, but i am not 100%

It might not have a turbo or power levels above stock,
but they put it in a van and asked it to work extra hard,.. that's why it would end up having oil squirters.

Hey what years were these engines used?
Anyone know if they are available as industrial engines? I might have to check with Jack, he rebuilds alot of industrial VW diesels.

i figured it was an industrial diesel at first..

thanks for all the info! I've been reading that oil squirters are not necessary in TD engines, for short bursts. Which, for me isnt a great thing as we have a lot of hills in this part of the UK and I like to put my foot down going up them sometimes.
I am very tempted by the 1.7 engine, especially if it had the squirters, however I'm also thinking that my car is relatively rare, even over here in Europe and keeping the engine code the same would be better than changing the specification of the car. I think the 1.7td would be awesome though with a giles pump, not great for originality though. Strickly SB engine for me!

just hang onto the SB engine. you dont have to get rid of it just because you put something else in the car..

Really there isn't that much worry swapping to another engine in the same family, as long as you keep all the external stuff matching the car.  Jezebel can be a bit of a basket case at times since all the bolt-on accessories are Mk II instead of Mk III.  Try finding engine mounts at a parts store for that!!

If you can go to a bare engine and then bolt on everything from there, I would totally go for the 1.7... there's no replacement for displacement!!

this always holds true haha.  1.7 is an odd engine it's rare, and honestly would make a car more desirable imo.  i like stuff thats original, but to have an extremely uncommon engine in a car it never came in.... thats a bit more interesting than oem
