Basic plans are to build an mk2 golf into a track car for fun in the summer...
I currently have a 86 westy golf with 1.6 n/a
I have all the parts to convert to turbo
I was going to ditch the diesel entirely and go directly to a 16v 9a from a passat, but i relized I might be able to achieve the same power levels and remain diesel
Im wondering if i go with a 1.6TD k24 fuel mod and gov mod, intake, exhaust and intercooler and boost it ~25psi
will i be able to achieve decent power levels to make it a proper competitor on the track?
main reason I want to go this route is that, its super easy to wire up, very simple and cheap to run, and DIFFERENT!
car will be lightened as much as I can without having it non street legal
THANKS

Competitor to what? What kind of track/racing, what class?
-
open track days, nothing specific, just run what you have basically
just im looking for 16v performance out of the 1.6td ;D
if its feasible I think its the route to go (have been doing some research it seems it is) but i need a solid answer
thanks

You need about 150HP to be in 16V company, so anything close to that will be fantastic. However, I must defer to the IDI gurus to know what it takes to get there (can tell you for ALH).

You'll have more fun with the 16v.

thanks for the input

my franken motor is in the 100-110 hp and does 0-60 in 9s.
stock 16v gti is around 8.5s 0-60, with the torque and low end power, you can do much better in the corners than a reving 16v.
Go diesel, hp means nothing, ( well a lot less than gassers) A 125hp idi (easy with stock pump tunes and k24 and intercooler) will feel like a 200hp gasser.

For track use, the #1 most important upgrade is a good oil cooler!

Have you heard of the chump car world series? Without a doubt the most fun automotive fun i've ever had. It's similar to the Lemons 24hr race series.

If you can check out a race near you I can pretty much guarantee you'll want to build a car for it. Diesel would be interesting, there is a team near us building a mid engine crappy caddy. They are thinking about a mtdi for it i think. Heat soak is the enemy tho.

cool 2 events in Brainerd MN ;D

Audi makes an IC that is pretty much perfect for a modified 1.6 its PN 035 145 805 E

ill be running duel rad fans and an oil cooler for sure
with gauges to monitor everything, EGT, OIL temp/press, Volts
is there any gain or at least put less stress by running an intank fuel pump to aid the IP draw fuel?
basically TD the stock 1.6 (which runs like new, PO was a diesel tech) Gov Mod, Fuel Mod, IC, k24, ~20psi, intake, exhaust
nathan_b, is it ok if i get more info about your setup, i need to be able to convince my friend into sticking diesel lol
The fact its easy to tune, easy to setup, easy to mod, cheap to operate, and reliable... should make for fun track days and save use some money
thanks for all the info

I read through the entire rules section of that Race Series. A friend of mine has tapped me to help him at the one down here in Sebring, FL. (They run the full Gran Prix Circuit!) It looks like a *** ton of fun. He runs an ABA with a Carb Setup, the air cleaner sticks outta the hood. It is beast. Mk3 Golf for the shell.
Even with all the mods I would think your best strategy would be fuel mileage. The race is based on distance traveled. Tune the turbo and the pump to give you some fun, cause it is a race after all, but keep fuel mileage as your ace in the hole. You arent gonna be some rocket ship thats gonna be lapping capable cars based on who's faster, youre gonna be lapping cars cause they have to go in and get another belly of go juice. And youre nowhere near empty.
If that is the series youre gonna try for. Going with that strategy could really give you the ability to keep costs super low, and the money you save there, you can throw at the bits of the car that are exempt from the 500 dollar limit like brakes, exhaust and tires!
Plus you have super spy deterrents with your diesel. Like shifting up a gear more than where you need to be and dumping the throttle as you go into a turn with someone beating up your back bumper. ;D Go go Golfdjet Smoke Screen!

81 caddy with a 1.6 w/ 1.9aaz head. K14 running 18psi. Toyota supercharged mr2 intercooler mounted next to the rad. mild governor mod. ground lda cone. fuel turned up, throttle arm rotated. with 15" tires it got 45mpg at 75mph taking it easyish. easy it gets 50mpg. Hard beating it on the daily commute, 38-41.
cruises 75mph with egts below 650.
can go 100 (on gps not speedo) with egts under 1100,
on a closed circuit of course.
0-60 around 9s.
I think it would beat a stock 16v swapped caddy, but my motors not stock, so take that for what you will. but it will beat my mk3 jetta to 60 and it's an aba with a 268 cam, chip, bilsteins and a 2.5 echaust. Not a rocket, but respectable to say the least.

thanks, will update soon as I move back

I know this is a diesel places and all but.. I'd tell you right now that I'd go 16v. I've got a 82 rabbit pick up that's not stock.. And I've had plenty of gas vw's all 8v that maybe couldn't out torque them but could take a beating hard for a lot longer.. I have a heat problem in my truck and maybe it's my own doing.. I'm running a 1.6eco engine that the head has been wildly ported and polished.. Intake polishe and ported.. Exhaust manifold polish and port matched, then heat rapped with a k24 pushing 20+ psi throw an air to air in front of a 8v rabbit conv. Rad. 2-1/2 stainless down pipe and straight pipe.. I can get the egt gauge to 1200-1350 full throttle runs to 110mph and the temp. Gauge starts to climb hard. Amost to 230°.. I have the stock oil cooler which I know needs to be thrown away and replaced. I also run an acn 5 speed trans. Which out of the o2o trans is the lowest geared.. 3.67 r&p. And a .75 5th. .. Heat is going to be your enemy is what I'm getting at. Ya.. I'd love to go thrash my truck around.. But if I was building a track car it wouldn't be a diesel.. The more fuel you dump in the more heat you build.. Gas car is opp. My 2 cents

yea, if you dont add enough air to burn all that fuel, yea, it gets hot.. but if you got enough air to burn that charge with no smoke, then its most likely fairly cool..
