Title: The Mule
Post by: rwdriver on May 04, 2011, 08:37:52 pm
it started out life as an 84 jetta diesel with a rear axle being held on by a cable

then had an encounter with a sawzall

then had a third leg installed

some finishing touches, and the mule is born complete with am/fm radio, static throttle(cruise control), chalkboard hood, and a 1200 watt power inverter is soon to be installed

Epic ;D
are you going to spring for some suspension at the 3rd wheel?
Also a motorcycle sprocket on a starter motor might be cool if you find yourself getting stuck.

Yeah and you could do like a motorcycle wheel and have a dual caliper setup, so you don't have to plug up anything on the master cylinder, just use it as-is

Post by: rwdriver on May 05, 2011, 08:46:15 am
It drives kinda funny. all the weight is over the front wheels, so it wont fishtail. you can pick uip the back end with one hand, so you have to go easy on the brakes or itèll tip over

Might need some more utensils on the back...maybe even a 3pt hitch hehe

here's another video. I bent the shift rod offroading a few days ago, so first and second are extremely hard to find, hence the poor shifting. enjoy :)

Depends on the state. Oklahoma, you can license just about anything, even those Japanese mini trucks

Ontario is fairly strict, but farm vehicles are pretty loose and fast in my experience.

In Michigan it would be a piece of cake putting it on the road. First off, it would be a motor cycle requiring a cycle endorsement on your drivers license. Second, it would be an assembled vehicle. Next time I'm at Home Depot I'll snap a photo of the vehicle one of the workers made.

Out here in BC there's these 3-wheel forklifts that a lot of the Home Depot trucks have hanging off the back.  They've all got their own plates as they need to be able to run around on the road by themselves delivering building materials.  Besides them having a roll cage and tail lights I don't see much difference!

Michigan is also the home of coat hanger and JB weld muffler vehicle repair.

I used to drive a 71 International Scout that the previous owner cut the back off, moved the rear glass up to the cab to create a pickup truck, and it had a wooden bed on it. It was fun to drive though. Short wheel base too. (I used to live up near Traverse)

I am fairly sure I have seen entire cars (barely) held together by coat hangers and JB weld on Michigan highways.

I've seen 'em so bad that the rear fenders flap like wings at highway speeds on I-75 to Gaylord

Those aren't wings...around here those are known as friendly cars, because they wave at you.

So I swapped out the K24 for a K03, and it's SO much more responsive.  With the K24, boost was zip until 3000rpm, and full boost at 3500rpm, but with the K03, the boost starts to rise at 1400rpm, and full boost at about 2000rpm. For anyone with a 1.6td, I highly reccomend a smaller turbo.

videos coming soon.

I see a need for seat belts or

a Monty Python skit where men wearing fur, horns and much warrior garb try stealing this rig and get cut off by a rove band of sheep and they have to hit the brakes hard.  Wheee  off they go flying.

Yea, think forklift and counterweight here for your own safety.  Never mind the sheep.

I also wondered about the total weight that spoke tire would support.  It isn't rated for much i am sure so pulling a loaded trailer might just pop them like pretzels.

chink.

Now were talking turning radius eh?  And individual brakes like a tractor.  You could learn to make it shimmy down the road and put it to music, shoot a UTube video and be famous.

Or Scorned by those of us that drive 4 wheelers of this vintage.

Yeah, I really want to do rear steering, but there's no way to do it without running a crazy small tire, or hacking up the frame.

Tempting....

Oh, and I was fiddling with the wastegate on the k14 today, and I found that with the wastegate completely disconnected, the boost peaks at about 18psi. is this normal?

Does anyone know where I could find a heavier flywheel?
Title: Re: The Mule
Post by: theman53 on July 15, 2011, 09:34:42 pm
a stock 1.9 diesel would be heavier as it is bigger...210mm

a 1.8 gasser maybe the same or similar weight. All you need to do is swap all the parts over. 18psi not intercooled is a bit much for that turbo I think.

ABAs got heavy flywheels, along with AAZs

1.8 flywheels are lighter than diesel flywheels..

gasser flywheels are lightest, then comes stock diesel wheels, then the heaviest ones are off the 1.9 and 2.0..
