got any opinions of losing the muffler on a 1.6NA?
i have a feelin this is going to happen to me soon..
-
It will be LOUD.. And I mean Incredafreakingably LOUD..

well, if that's true, then i'm glad you told me that ... shucks >:(

cut it off? or just run straight pipe?
-
cut it off? or just run straight pipe?
both? cut it off and replace it with a straight pipe..
-
Cut it off? Whats wrong with just waiting till vibration work-hardens your pipes till they split? Thats what I do....
and +1 on the LOUD.

hmm i'm not even sure what work-hardens means.. but loud like .. OMG why'd i do this loud? yeah this plan fell apart it seems.. the damn car is already loud to begin with. like it's not mufflerlessly loud: fart-can.. it's.. weird loud.
like .. at 55-65mph, the engine roar is kinda ..LOUD. from the front of the car loud.
-
Just replaced mine with this
(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b126/SVOlvo/D24T/DVC01205.jpg)
Added 2 spintech mufflers, and it's still loud.
-
but loud like .. OMG why'd i do this loud? yeah this plan fell apart it seems..
Exactly.. With a TD it isn't as bad as the turbo helps muffle things.. I have 2" pipe and a glass pack on my NA and it is borderline "why'd I do this" loud...
-
I'm running a stright pipe on my '81 Caddy 1.6NA, Oh man its killer load. I put a resonator in and its still way to load. Running anything over 60mph, you can't even think! :o My last Caddy had a stright pipe with a 4" stack out the bed and it wasn't quit as bad for some reason. I'm looking to get some sort of muffler back on my Caddy I drive now.
-
I'm running 2.5 turbo back on my 1.9TD, it's "loud car" loud, but not obnoxious or unbearable, and it's no more audible over traffic than any other "loud car", if that.... However, A 1.6NA drove past me with his exhaust broken off at the rear beam (could see it dragging), and I could hear him over my car for a solid 1/2 km after he went past me. Put a turbo on it... Then ditch the muffler ;)
Turbo=world's most expensive muffler.
-
^ This post describes my caddy to a T. I tried various combinations of 3 different mufflers, and it never made much diffrence.

i had a straight pipe with a glass pack muffler on my car when it was still n/a..
it would get exhaust rap at like 800 RPMS, so it would rap for every shift..
it was STUPID LOUD for sure.. and i STILL HAD A MUFFLER!
-
:'( i wanted to cut my muffler off...
-
Soo doo itt!
I currently run my n/a with a 2" straight pipe with a glass pack for a muffler. You just need to make sure that the exhaust exits from under the car, or else it will resonate under the car and be ridiculous inside the cabin.
It is quieter than my 8v gasser I had on the same exhaust before I swapped motors.
Do it. Hack it off so that its easily fixable and your golden :)

ive never heard a n/a gasser even come close to being diesel loud..
my diesels have all been so loud that they will make your ears ring after a good wide open pull..
-
The opinions are like 8 to 1 haha. I'll never run a straight piped NA again............
-

me either, thats a no brainer.. i like loud pipes too. but n/a diesels are just TOO LOUD. anybody remember the old IDI fords with straight pipes? GOD DAMN they were loud..
-

my diesels have all been so loud that they will make your ears ring after a good wide open pull..
Well I doubt our diesels sound any different, my interpretation of the 1.6 na with a cherry bomb and nothing else is much quieter than my 1.7 gas motor. The diesel sound is all from the engine, not the tail pipe.
I'll never run a straight piped NA again............
Was it legit straight piped? or did it have any sort of muffler at all? A glass pack will change the tone completely and take it from a droney horrible sound to a nice note, with rasssp. I have a 67 Cougar that we straight piped, true duals to the rear off the long tube headers. Holy christ.. Threw on some $30 cherry bomb glass packs and sweet sweet music.
anybody remember the old IDI fords with straight pipes? GOD DAMN they were loud..
50:1 CR will make a loud explosion ;)
TO THE OP, you wanted to do it originally, so doo it man. Go with your first instinct. Just make it reversible if you dont like it the muffler goes back on. Plus you likely have a resonator still, that will muffle some sound. It might sound bad ass.

Response 1.) dude, there is DEFINITELY a sound coming out the tail pipe on diesels.. if you think all the noise comes from the engine, then think, or listen again. sure the clack at idle is engine noise.. if all that noise is from the engine and not the exhaust, then why do EXHAUST MUFFLERS make the engine quieter?
anything else, is exhaust noise. i REALLY WISH you could have heard my n/a with an open header.. gave a new meaning to the term "LOUD". yes, OPEN HEADER on a diesel rabbit, not open manifold..
Response 2.) yes, it was a Legit straight pipe, like came off the downpipe, no mufflers, then exited in front of the rear tire.. it was FUGGIN LOUD!! it would RRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP right off an idle.. thru every gear. you couldnt drive that car and not rap the pipes..
another thing to remember, if your going to run straight pipes, just remember that overkill on the diameter, is a good thing on straight pipes.. it mellows them down alot, gets rid of alot of the low RPM rap..
Response 3.) ford IDIs never had 50:1 compression, they had like 18-19:1 compression.. our IDI VWs are the highest-factory-compression engines ive ever seen.. tell me that the ford IDIs with straight pipes didnt make any sound out the tail pipe? all that sound was from the engine, not the exhaust?
24:1 (diesel) exhaust is alot louder than 8.5:1 (gasser) exhaust generally..

Mine is turbo'd with just a resonator and it dumps out just underneath my backseat floorpan driver side, in front of the lr tire. I love it so much. Has a nice throaty burble when I'm on the skinny pedal and at cruise it has a slight drone that is not bad at all.
I do believe that without the garden snail it would be intolerable. I say do it but like others have suggested, make sure it exits not under the car. Or get a big bottle of excedrin.

HAHAHAHAHA... exactly.. cause it will be that loud.
-
HAHAH! He said make sure it exits from under the car. ;) Even a muffled exhaust not exiting from under the car would have a drone as the exhaust note would be trapped and circling under the car.

my car doesnt drone, i have a 10" exhaust system...LONG.
-
You also have a turbocharged engine. which does not apply to which we are referring.
And your a liar ;D. Same exhaust on my bro's TD, right off the dp, and extended 6"? to point at the ground. There is still exhaust drone inside the car. Comparing to a perfectly sealed muffled exhaust system exiting behind the rear valence.

no, im not a liar, you just have never ran a VNT on a 1.6
VNTs muffle the exhaust easily twice as much as a conventional turbo.. and scream twice as loud as a conventional turbo..
thats why i get away with an 8" long downpipe.. because my turbo is way down low, not up high behind the intake manifold like a normal TD..
yes Jeremy, my car really is that quiet, no drone AT ALL in the cabin.. you hear the intake noise more than from the drone that isnt there..
there, fixed it for ya jeremy.
-
VNT on a 1.6? Thought we were talking bout non-turbo engines? :P
more than the drone from the pipes..
So there is a drone then eh? lol
-
I have to admit though, I would like it a little louder. Once I switch to the 2.25 DP and 2.25 straight, with a turndown exiting in front of the left rear but out towards traffic, NOT under the car I am hoping I will get that "little moar" loud that I want, and also quiet the cabin down a little bit. I am also hoping that I get that turbo whistle out the exhaust pipe that I have seen/heard on youtube.
Like this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGnTooQrh6s
I have no relation to these persons or the car.
-
This is my car, 2.5 downpipe and 2.5 exhaust with a straight flow muffler.
this clip is a cold start, lots of white smoke, but I've been meaning to capture the sound of the exhaust because i've never had a chance to hear it before.
http://www.vimeo.com/23416173
*edit it was raining when this was being filmed, so there are odd sounds of cars driving by in the rain, behind the camera
-
I would love to hear how it sounds warmed up. Why does it smoke so white on startup?
-

my car needs a tune up BAD. as I think the injectors are getting worn and tired, and maybe dirty
-
Vangruver, you look like you could use a little more static advance in your pump. Whats it set at? stock settings?
-

low compression or retarded timing.. maybe even a burnt out glow plug or 2..

yep, stock settings.

and I think you're right. i've been meaning to spend more time to check out the status of the glow plugs. and or compression.
I really need to change out the transmission first and foremost though.
-
wow vangruver that thing makes the wildest noise!
i kinda like that farm tractor sound you have going.. i might wack the muffler after all.. after i chase down yet another fuel leak

if i can rush the internet, i'd be rich.

Warmed up
still smoking a little bit.
dirty injectors.

haha ok so this is with no muffler at all? cause if so that's exactly how i'd like it to sound. is it ***ta loud or what? drone? rasp?
-

that has an inline muffler.
this is the picture of the exhaust before i installed it on the car. it was taken by the previous owner
(http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/3064/img0615jpgb.jpg)
it's a good sound on the inside, not overly loud not overly raspy either. it's moderate, but I don't have much in the way of sound deadening. I'm considering it, but we will see.
-
You have a glass-pack inline. Exactly what Ive been saying to do :D Thats my exact system, except my glass-pack is in the tunnel.
-

hmm....i didn't know?! All i know is it sounds super decent on the outside.
-
does it sound like an old 2 stroke detroit when your on it? Mine does :)
-
I had an NA with 2 glass packs on it and I thought it was perfect. I was running 2.25" tubing front to back as well. Smaller tubing may make it louder.
-
Didn't I hear turbo whistle on both those videos though? Neither of them were NA, which definitely changes the sound.... They both sounded similar to mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eovDWm5Nr70
Car has no muffler or resonators, stock cat still in place. But it's also a TD.

hahah when you passed by the first time it was sounding righteous! but i don't have a turbo, i don't have a cat i don't think, and i dont' have a glasspack laying around. just a hacksaw. what glasspack do ya'll suggest? i was hoping not to have to pay someone for this jobber
-

that looks more like a resonator.. glass packs only work on diesels for a while, till they plug up from the soot. resonators dont clog up, they are hollow.
-
What gOod do they do if their completely hollow? Plugged up glasspack? Just need some DEF ;)
-

they still cancel the exhaust drone pretty good. they rely on the sound bouncing into each other to cut noise.. they work better, and for longer than a glass pack. ;D

I just got a small 2.5 inch straight through can muffler put on my mk2 TD Golf and a 2.5" exhaust pipe all the way from the turbo downpipe and it's WAY TOO LOUD under load and I hate it, I really need to figure out what to do. I couldn't imagine removing the muffler entirely. I know someone that cut the muffler off of their TDI Golf and it actually wasn't that loud and was much better than I expected.

it probably a catalytic converter, or it had a VNT turbo.. did it have lots of turbo scream?
my car is a 1.6 idi with a VNT15 turbo.. i run an open downpipe. (literally only 8" long, it comes out right beside the smoke pedal basically) my car is quiet even at highway speed, or passing a car on the highway for that matter.. quiet enough that you can talk to your passenger in a normal tone of voice.. all you hear is the turbo scream..
when i had a K24 turbo on there, it was MUCH LOUDER.. just the style of turbo has alot to do with how loud it is..
-

I forgot about the catalytic converter, I'm sure it still had the cat and probably the VNT turbo, you could hear the turbo right off idle.
Incidentally I have a T3 on mine.

I'm running a Jones louvered (not perforated) glasspack. When I spoke with a tech at Jones, I asked the same question about the soot. He said I'd be fine, but I still oriented the glasspack so the louvers weren't acting like a scoop.

thats how i would have installed it too. and i believe that they are supposed to flow that way anyway IIRC?

The tech told me that their's are reversible. If I'd have installed it the other way, it'd have been quieter with a slight decrease in flow.
I'm running mine with a ported Euro GTI exhaust manifold through a TT long twin tube. 2" TT exhaust with the 12" (3.5" diameter) Jones resonator, and exiting through an old Dynomax UltraFlo. It's pretty quiet.... I like it that way.
BTW, I have a 2.25" SS Magnaflow (not yet installed) and it's fully welded.

weird, the old ones must have been crimped, or my mind is playing tricks on me and they were all welded.. its completely possible.
i havent touched one of those in about 5 years..

ok i think i dropped a set of balls and i'm going to wack the thing tonight, depending on the autozone selection of mufflers incase it's too damn loud. only 1.5 inch pipe so i'm affraid it's gonna rasp as well as this muffler is HUGE. so we will see. i'll report back with video when i'm done
edit: autozone seems to having NOTHING in a 1.5'' ID .. they had a cherry bomb ''turbo" for a painful $35 with a i 2'' ID. a coupler, a few clamps and tax was $45. tomorrow we'll have vids on: current, no muffler, and turbo muffler

yup, it will..
and you gotta get a reducer to go from 2" down to your size..
-
Ok! Wasn't nearly as bad as expected! It has some other, equally large muffler right under the drivers seat, so its not bad @ all! That muffler must have been really jammed up because I get more power, and some black smoke under load. Kinda noisy around 50 mph goin up hill, but exact what I wanted. Video soon

you can click the bottom one its actually a video.. altho that's not clear?
wifey ran it out real hard on the first rev, but you get the idea.
it doesn't rasp like the video seems to make it, that's just my cellphone mic distorting.
so all in all, no muffler FTW.. no blat or rasp, good sound not overly loud. little more power/torque easier shifts.
-
lol "Gawd, just a *little* bit" I can just picture the look on your face....
Sounded pretty decent. Needs bigger piping, but I like my car sounding like a Cummins.
-
Yea, you get rid of the midget coffin under the car and you get 1 extra mpg, lol.

you still got a resonator or something in the system, cause if you didnt, it would be obnoxious..
