I have a 95 Golf TD rustout here and a 91 GTi 16v can be had nearby. has anyone ever done a swap like this? mk2 16v gas to diesel using a mk3 for a donor? it's pretty much just a parts change isn't it? gastank exhaust do some wiring? if anyone's done it please let me know what you think.

I put a mk2 diesel engine into a mk2 gasser Golf
Straight forward.
Give me a call if you like
-
oh that's an easy one I'm wondering about the mk3 to mk2.
-
Well the mounts are the same. I think it would be pretty straight-forward.
-
No need to change the gas tank or the wiring either (if you dont mind a few redundant connectors hanging around)
-
I would want to change the gas tank and lines if they fit so I can get rid of the fuel pumps and the restriction on the filler neck. I think they interchange but not positive.
-
You could take out the in tank pump if you wanted to. For the filler restriction, I tore out the metal flap and heated up a piece of 1" tube IIRC with a gas torch and enlarged the hole accordingly.
-
ok I hear ya man but I don't want to do all that stuff. I just wanna plug and play otherwise it's too much work. you feel me? 8)
-
Yes, but swapping tanks is work too! Its easier to mod the filler neck and leave the pump in.
This is Livermore ghetto we are talking, yes ;D
-
geto? sheet lol
-
Livermore? Ghetto? Who would say such a thing!? ;D
-
look up ce2, it should be plug and play..

Some snob from the coast! ;D

Heck the engine swap part is easy under the hood and even wiring since its ce2 and a td(not many wires needed to make it work properly)! the gas tank i have no personal exp with but shouldn't be that bad!It just seems like everytime i drop one(tank) from up north i end up breaking bolts and drilling and tapping something.

You won't be able to exchange fuel tanks, but i don't think it'd be too hard to remove the lift pump and run a line down from where it attaches to the bottom of the tank cover. That way you will have the fuel sender that matches the gauge. The biggest issue would be the exhaust.

I just put an AAZ into a mk2 jetta, was a gas car. Label your wires as you pull the gas engine. The fuel pump on mine was ahead of the tank where the water separator should be, just eliminated it. you can shorten the plastic lines so the rubber hose hookup is easier/straighter, just remember you need to put the brass inserts back in so you can clamp it together. Hook the fuel pump to the line that fed the coil. Move the glow plug relay and the wire it runs from the donor car to the other one, circuit is plug and play. Use the downpipe that came with the diesel and have an exhaust shop hook you back up. You can have it running in a weekend easy. Don't cut off extra wires until you have it running and everything working..... there's (on an 8 valve) three different temp sensors, two are for the computer, only one needed for the guage. Oil sensors should be the same, as well as starter circuit and alternator. Only thing you might run into is power steering lines having a different hookup. My engine had already been in a mk2 car and used v belts instead of the serpentine belt, but I think if you use the serpentine setup you just need to use one line off the donor car. Either that or switch pumps...
