Want to transfer them to my 81 caddy 1.6na, exactly what parts do I need off the turbo jetta to make it work? It's an 83 turbo diesel that has a bad head and the rings are garbage. Sat in a barn for 10 years or somethin like that.
***Main Question*** Hoping to test the turbo before purchase but need some definite specs to measure for. I know I should be looking for minimal play both end-play and axial play, but how much is good/bad?
-
Any end-end play is usually bad. Axial play of less than a mm is usually ok.
Libbybapa has a post with a pic of the play. Not sure where it is. Try the search function.

Thanks! I searched and searched for turbo end play etc, but never with Libbybapa's name to narrow the search, only took a couple clicks from there... as long as THIS is the one you were referencing http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=21899.0

Thanks again!

yea, thats his video..

I bought the car, $350 (more than I wanted but hopefully worth it).
1983 2door Jetta Turbo Diesel. Been sitting in a barn for 8 years. Story goes they parked it because it was blowing coolant hoses off. According to some of my classmates who were "diagnosing" it in their Alternate Fuels class, the rings are bad and the head is cracked really bad (I've confirmed the head as it is currently off).
IP looks really clean on the outside,
Turbo is tight, sprayed it down with PB blast hoping to free it up a bit, we'll see if that helps.
Manifolds look good.
What is the "checklist" (if you will) of differences between the NA's and TD's?
Intake manifold
Exhaust manifold
Turbo
Oil feed and return lines
Injection Pump
Injectors
Hard lines?
Head?
Cam?
Block?
Pistons?
Rods?
Crank?
Pulleys?
I'm trying to decide if I should swap the turbo parts (manifolds, IP, lines, injectors) onto my current long block, OR, take my time and completely rebuild the turbo engine and THEN swap it all in as a whole. Either way, is there a post or list of engine parts that are different/the same from the NA's to TD's?
Pix to come very soon.
-
Do both. Put the turbo stuff on your current block, and run it. In the meantime, build the TD block.
-
Is there any major body damage? If not that shell is worth much more than $350.
-
To answer your last question:
- hard lines are different, specifically 1 and 2, I think 3 and 4 are the same but 1 and 2 have to be different, to clear the injection pump boost compensator thingy
-head, at least with all the stuff on it is different, I think, I don't believe the bare head is though
-factory turbo blocks had oil squirters for the pistons
-pistons are different
-iirc the lower rotating parts are the same as are the pulleys, but I'm not 100% sure
I would definitely use the whole turbo engine, rather than piece together a turbo conversion, I think you end up with a more reliable engine that way though plenty of people have stuck turbos on n/a cars.
Small cracks between the valves on these motors are not uncommon and if they are not very wide, aren't really a problem.

Make sure to have the head pressure tested, sometimes small cracks between the valves that look totally normal or are within "spec" can leak big time.
-
I am sure you could make some money or trade someone that mk1 coupe for a nice condition 1.6td....
don't cut up a coupe,,,
-
Any chance you'll be parting out what you don't use on your caddy? Those seats look to be in pretty good shape and mine on the old Rabbit are falling apart, so I could use some newer ones (if they'd fit).
-
That Jetta....does it have the small bumper turns that would go into MK2. Like the ones in my MK2 in the which bumper do I have thread in the troubleshooting section.
-
man i think i'd rather put that jetta back together and keep looking for another engine for the truck, its a 2 door factory turbo diesels, i've only ever heard of one other one
-
oh man and its a factory non ac car with a shift light... you gotta put it back together that thing would be hot
-
i'm really sitting here freaking out to the thought u want to use the parts from a mk1 jetta coupe factory turbo diesels to make a caddy a turbo diesel, but then i again i hate caddys because they all rust away... really you gotta fix up that coupe
-
Yea, That car is ULTRA-RARE!!! Please restore it or trade it to someone who will for a TD engine. That thing is worth at least an AAZ swap, maybe even a TDI to somebody.
-
i love those models, try to save it
-
83 was first year for Mk1 TD.
83 TD Jetta is very rare.
Factory 83 TD Jetta 2door is ultra rare.
First one i've ever heard about.
Trucks are more desirable/valuable in the common market overall.
But the Jet you have is pretty special in certain merits.
Do what you have to.
But keep your options open perhaps.
And try to store the Jet out of the weather - or at least off the ground. 2 cinderblocks high makes a big difference versus sitting on the tires/earth.
Great Find
-
yeah man that jetta would be sweet and it has a nice interior, just needs put back together and a paint job and that thing would be hot as hell
-
Here's the thing guys, I just plain have no interest in this body style. I appreciate the rarity of it and won't crush it, but I have to be able to get a TD (or a TDI ;))out of it, one way or another. I guess I'll post it up on the For Sale and feel out what the serious interest is.
-
Did you post it on whoretex? There's a guy trying to sell a knackered 1984 td jetta four-door with 352k miles for $3500 that makes your coupe worth $5000 easy!

There's a big difference between "asking price" and what something sells for. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. If you wait long enough, the fish will bite.
-
Rare is one thing, but I never understood the appeal of either a 2 door sedan- your rear area is not easily accessible- and I definitely don't understand the appeal of the factory shift light. I have one and it's disconnected. Then again, I don't really understand the appeal of Caddys either...
Anyone care to explain?
-
The appeal is that car may be the only one like it still in the united states of america. I'm not a Jetta guy, not even a VW guy, and I would give a TDI swap for that car so I could restore it and drive it. I enjoy driving a unique automobile. Feel out some interest, and make it clear what it is worth to you. I'm sure someone in the community will be happy to give what you would ask.
-
I'll take a TDI swap for a Jetta coupe TD. I know where one is thats been sitting for a while. Looks complete.
Also just checked on a pop top Eurovan 5spd, thats been sitting for 6yrs.
-

Is this at your VW Heaven Josh?
I've got a "feeler" on here, will post on "whoretex" (lol) too.
-
Nope. Just saw it on the way out to pick up my rebuilt shocks, off the beaten path on Sauvies Island.
-
Oh, well quite harshin' on my uniqueness man ;D
** I added this link (https://picasaweb.google.com/rexburg22re/83TDJetta?feat=directlink (https://picasaweb.google.com/rexburg22re/83TDJetta?feat=directlink)) to the photo album in the original post, bigger pix for less squinting **

I don't particularly like jettas at all though I find the proportions of the two door sedan to be more pleasing than the four door model. I've had a few two door cars and don't have any problem with rear seat access especially those with fold down rear seats.
If caddys were rwd or 4wd they would be the ultimate small truck. The appeal to me is being able to haul stuff and get better than 40mpg, basically twice the mileage of the nearest competitor and able to haul the same amount. My record for a dumprun was 1180 lbs, granted it was riding on the bumpstops but it's totally comfortable with about 900 lbs even though I've yet to overhaul my rear suspension
-
I hauled about 1500 pounds of tools engines parts and a tranny from Canada to NC (up and down and through the blue ridge mountain ranges in West Va - Va - NC) and averaged about 39mpg.
Caddy's RULE ! ! !
(yeh i've got beefed rear suspension and TD powertrain)
Mk1 2dr Jets are ultralight ... like Rabbits are.
Ultimate HotRodder or MPG'er.
But you won't see mirror images of a 2dr TD Mk1 Jet everywhere, or maybe even anywhere.
I'd trade one of my complete Mk2 TD engines, for this complete car.
And provide Mk1 breather/snorkel/downpipe with the engine, to fit his truck.
But i'm not going to idaho to do it - is my holdback.
79rabbit4dr, feel like dragging that ugly bucket to NC ?
is it a TD-GL ?
-
2 doors were always considered to be more sporty in any kind of car, and with a 2 door being less common, it just makes them more popular, the trucks i think the appeal is that they all are destined to rust away at the strut towers and floors, so everyone wants to save them, kind of like how girls like bad boys ;D
-
2door chassis is sturdier than 4door - if you were after a curve carver.
2door Jets (a1 & a2) have always looked a lil gawky to me at first.
Such a big side window back there ... first impression is always like shouldn't they have just put another door in that spot perhaps - ? lol
Be cool if Wolfsburged and his Wife could get this car.
Only people i know who are fully versed in every square inch of german built first gen Jets. Surprising how different they are from similar vintage rabbits once you get into them.
-
What does the emblem on the trunklid say ?
And is the trunklid itself in good rust-free condition ?
-
vultures haha, surprisingly 4 doors are actually sturdier, and 2 doors are light.
-
Generally four-door chassis are more rigid due to the central location of the b-pillar. Two-doors just look "sportier."

where do the top two go? It's got one of those in the glove box.
That GTI was a LOT of fun and it wasn't mine so I could drive it like I stole it ;D
-
The top two cover over the gauge holes in center console.
Anyone interested?
-
oh, btw BVZ, I meant to say that the trunk lid is the same as the rest of the car, no major damage, very minor surface rust spots.
-
Sorry, I ment to say that the top one is a radio delete cover and the other is a gauge cover.
-
cool, thanks. I'll have to see exactly which one it is that I have.
-
You can see the small raised plastic trim around the edge on the gauge cove.
-
They all had gauge hole provisions in console behind the nameplate, but i think only the GLi actually got gauges there on the A1 Jets.
But none of the Diesels got any gauges down there i've ever seen.
I love them A1 Jet Diesel emblems
I always grab them to put them on my A2 Jets
haha :P
-
I wonder what BVZ could be posting about thats been taking so long???
-
lol
everytime i went to go to post my entry - it stops and says review new posts first. You guys are e-blocking me out
Spearco i call first dibs if you wanna sale the Non-GL TD emblem !
This non-AC car would be HellaOnWheels Factory HotRod with that radio delete plate 8)
-
PM sent BVZ
-
I remember why I stopped posting on vortex... ::)
-
Didn't see it on vortex..?
Definitely an interesting car. Worth saving for someone. Too far away and too far gone for me; I've already got one major project and one too many cars/not enough space, or garage..
-
aww come on Wolfsburged, you and the missus could handle this thing like clockwork in a few saturdays.
Ingold would probably let you store it at his place. (outdoors)
I didn't see it on vtex either.
What section is it listed .. or you got a link to it ?
-
Now you guys have me questioning if I put it in the wrong section, that's how much I DON'T frequent that board.

-
you can post it in the diesel classefieds as well, i think the problem is you posted it on the vortex, if u were closer i'd trade you as complete of a td setup as i could scrape together for that car, i think i could do pretty complete too.
-
X2
I would do it just for a fun car, but I have too much stuff and too far for me. I had forgot that Idaho was a state. Nothing against Idaho, as I have forgotten most of the New England states as well. I remember only when I have to think :D
-
No offense taken. I rather like the fact that we fly under the radar, for the most part. Used to live in Seattle and there's too many whack-jobs there. Much better family-raising environment out here... and no emissions testing ;D
Location for selling VW parts is the only downfall to being out here, it's ALWAYS "too far." But, then again, I always run across these types of scenarios where I find great stuff locally that never gets moved out of there area.
