Title: Prechamber just fell out.
Post by: jaysen71581 on February 09, 2011, 03:11:42 pm
So i had sometime today to pull my head and do an autopsy on the headgasket and as i pulled it off i heard the sound of metal hitting floor, upon inspection it was a prechamber, i called thepartsplace to order a new one and they were out and i asked the question of if there was a seal, the nice man told me no they are pressed in, i may have a head issue.. Am i looking at a new head, if so im cool with that i just need an 11mm head.. Also if anyone has any 11mm heads i am in the market for one, now... :P

Ive got a few ideas ill list as follows:
1. Im a Ra-Tard
2. The head was not properly torqued to the motor which caused the gasket to blow and allow all of my coolant to go through my motor and end up in my oil pan
3. Im a Ra-Tard again
4. This is my first motor ive ever put back together so i expected something messed up to happen

Its retard you idiot ;D

I don't think your coolant issues are related. Don't panic ..............yet ;D

Nice view of the inside of the head. Take another close up for me please.
Just inspect the cup for cracks radiating from hole and if free from them, just reinsert and using a springpunch/swage the flesh around the cup.
Infact, I'd do a few before reinserting the cup to allow the metal to move towards the hole...

Thats the thing, it slides in and out freely there is no resistance to "pop" it in..
Coolant issues are it keeps sucking the coolant into the motor and my coolant ends up as chocy milk but im pretty sure once i get my head on and torqued properly i wont have that issue..

The action of the punch will shrink the hole.
First though, give the chamber behind the loose precup a really close inspection for cracks into the coolant

You have an 11mm block. I don't think your "choco-milk" issue is  due to a blown head gasket, but rather, a cracked block. Cracked blocks are extremely common on the 11mm motors, as the head bolts do not go into the block very deep. Look at the rear, corner bolt holes. I'm willing to bet that one or both is cracked to a coolant port.

If you hadn't properly torqued the gasket, you would likely have pressure in either the coolant, the case, both, or weeping coolant out of the gasket. Mixed oil and coolant usually means cracked block.

So, the prechamber issue may be a moot point. You may have to junk that whole setup and upgrade to a proper hydraulic 12mm block.

It is my duty to inform all of you that today at 9:57pm EST that Engine code CY aka the 11mm Engine Block past away at its home this evening, cause of death was a crack in the block.  It was a good block taken long before its time, it left behind a 5 speed trans, good head, clutch, turbo setup, 20 over turbo pistons, a rebuilt turbo diesel pump and an '84 Rabbit and one pissed off owner. Services will be held tuesday morning in Hagerstown Maryland at the scrap yard, the family request that any donations can be made to the "i need a new motor foundation" pm for paypal information.

One of those instances where I wasn't happy to find out I was right.

Hang in there, and please stay in the diesel world. There is a motor out there for you. Patience.

The good news is that once you convert to 12mm, you should never have to worry about a cracked block again (unless of course you throw a rod thru the block).

Also, look on the bright side: you already have the turbo stuff ready to go. So, all you need is a good, workable block.

You might even try www.car-part.com. It's a listing of just about every j-yard in the USA, and many in Canada. Who knows, you might find a cheap core.

Keep us posted...

It was a good block taken long before its time,

No it wasn't...  ;)  Seriously though, if you get in a pinch I have a couple ME? (NA 12mm mech lifter) engines laying around..  I'm probably a tad over an hour from you...
