Title: Chocolate Milk with a side of gauges..
Post by: jaysen71581 on December 19, 2010, 03:57:43 pm
Well just as it says, i made a noob mistake and forgot to torque the head to the proper spec and when i finally got it running i made my new special blend of oil and antifreeze, thankfully we caught it and i was able to drain both the coolant and oil.  I went to the local autoparts shop and bought Motor Flush made by Gunk, the person at the counter said to run it for about 5 mins drain and do it again with out motor flush, does that idea sound good any thoughts or am i just screwed...

Part 2
I have the center console out of a Cabrio and it has the VDO gauges, will they work with my stock sending units?  If not should i just go with like this with its own gauge sender unit:

cabby gauges need cabby sending units.

follow the directions on the back of the jug for the engine flush.

I re-tightened them after i saw bubbles between the head and the motor that's when i dove into the bentley and saw i missed the final step, i re-torqued and no more bubbles.  I think it took me 3 days after the initial start-up before i did the motor flush today...  Thanks R.O.R-2.0  i guess ill go with the sunpro gauges and tap out everything to standard thread...

the sender for the cabriolet gauges are standard vdo and readily available, check 42draftdesigns they usually are fairly cheap or your local pick and pull. It will fit you existing thread in the cylinder head.

We've had some cases of inadvertent filling of oil in radiators or oil/coolant cross-contamination through coolers, and the Cummins and MTU Detroit Diesel recommendations were always to use washing soda in the coolant system to remove all traces of oil.   It takes several cycles of water and washing soda to get the passages cleaned, but it doesn't foam up like soap products would.

For the oil system I would go with what was recommended.

So the new sender units will just screw in like they are suppose to without tapping???  If so then ill have me some gauges up and running in no time.....

What kind of washing soda?

well, the threads are NOT the same on aftermarket gauges, but are VERY close. so if you use teflon tape, ive had no problem with leaks, or damaged threads. its basically the same threads, just the metric threads are not tapered.. just straight in.

cabby senders will screw right in the head, and work with your gauges no problem..

If this is a play on when i said "standard vdo" that would mean nothing special vdo not "standard" threads, they are a metric m10x1 iirc MY point was that a simple vdo sending unit from many vws fitted with a gauge will fit his head, as it should properly. As well they are available from vdo new.

When I installed gauges to my diesel caddy with a cabby dash swap I went to http://egauges.com and got the matching vdo senders.  They have a wide selection at good prices.

Ive found a set of metric adapters for the sunpros, i was looking at my vdo gauges and they look kinda rough, what size are those gauges that came in the Cabrio's? i was thinking 2 inch..

The stock triple gauges in the cabriolets are 2" they actually measure around 2 1/8" but they call them 2".

To be honest I don't remember the brand, just went to Walmart and bought the only one they had on the shelf.

Gauges are ordered and on the way, i have made a "to do" list for the car to stay on track so while i wait for my gauges i am hooking up the exhaust and replacing the nasty brake hose ect. im doing another oil change and see how the oil looks and i guess thats about it, a few tuning things here and there..

Way back, my X was driving a Volvo 544 (B18), and blew a heater hose while driving to town (-35f). Of course the temp gauge shot up suddenly, but no steam from engine compartment (rupture was right at firewall, downward, and at those temps, there was always a big cloud of steam behind the car) she thought ' Damn temp gauge has gone screwy' and continued driving (about 20miles of running around, and back home). When I got home, I discovered the dry rad, replaced the hose, and refilled. I then ran the car for about an hour, and all seemed normal. However, 3 days later, she reported that the oil light had started blinking when she dropped the kids at school, oil was checked, and way over full, (mixed oil and coolant). The car was parked, and towed home that night. The next night, under a tarp, with a propane radiant heater (-40f) I removed the head, and had it trued, with a valve job too (95,000 mi). On re-assembly, I filled the 'case with a 50/50 mix of kerosene and good 10-30, with a new filter, and ran for 5 minutes. Drained, refilled with 50/50 mix, new filter, and ran 15 minutes. Drained, filter changed, refilled with good brand 10-30, and installed a mech gauge (which consistantly peaked over 80 psi hot). we finally retired the car 60,000mi later, only because the body got Swiss Cheesy, and we got a better one (same model).

Ill be putting the temp probe in alittle later today after the motor cools down and if the autoparts store is open probably a new fan relay, the fan doesnt want to come on so i may have to wire up a switch...
