Title: Catch can/filter for blowby tube on 354 perkins?
Post by: Patrick on August 12, 2010, 04:53:59 am
Anyone got any good suggestions? Getting tired of the fumes/drips. Rebuilt engine had some blowby from the word go (1998) don't think the rings ever seated the way they should have. Runs good, but has stuff coming out the tube as soon as it's warmed up. Dumps straight on the ground, fumes around the cab as soon as you're sitting at a light. (engine is in an old GMC crew cab). I'm open for suggestions.... pictures?

Been considering that, but I'm afraid of a runaway............ might try it anyway. Had it all ripped apart yesterday due to a major oil leak....... The seal was gone on the front of the vacuum pump, can't understand why, tag on the back of the pump says it was built in 1964...... didn't touch it when I rebuilt the motor in '98........
Figured out where SOME of the crankcase pressure is coming from. It has a vacuum pump mounted to the side of the engine powered off an auxillary shaft with a lovejoy coupler. The oil and the pressure that the pump creates when it's drawing vacuum both get dumped into the crankcase......

Fit some sort of oil/vapor separator that drains back into the crankcase like Volvos have. 1980's Volvos (I think the turbo models all had this) would be a good place to look, they had an oil/vapor separator can under the intake that drained the oil into the crankcase and vented the vapors into the intake. They are known for clogging up after so many years.

Thought of that, problem is there's no decent spot to get back into the engine with the drain.......

A water separator for compressed air systems with 1/2"NPT ports works great and is low cost.

Oil pan isn't an easy option.............
Going to try to put the blowby cap off a MK2 1.6 on top of the perkins valve cover, complete with screen out of the VW cover, and plumb it in to the intake. Nothing ventured, nothing gained........
When I get it done I'll post a picture or two.
