Title: Where does this green wire go?
Post by: socalsean on August 11, 2010, 02:51:32 pm
I have misplaced my manual and need a bit of help. Where does this green wire go? A mouse ate one end of it. 1982 Jetta diesel 1.6na.

Not sure what you are after...but on my Mk1 (82 1.6L NA) the wire goes to a large wrapped bundle on the drivers side of the vehicle. I looked it up in a 82-84 wiring diagram and see that is a 16 gauge wire on both sides of the ambient air switch between a connector labeled T6a/2 and T6a/3. I think it is supposed to keep the a/c from coming on if the ambient air is too cool. Have no idea what year vehicle you have. HTH.

The car is a 1982 Jetta 1.6na.

The  green wire comes off a temp sensor and goes somewhere. The wire was chewed up near the compressor.

So I shouldn't need it connected to anything in order to run the engine safely? (the a/c doesn't work)

this is probably the reason it doesnt work. i bet its the wire to engage the clutch.

Sounds like it's the low pressure cutoff switch for the A/C compressor.  Prevents damage to the compressor if there isn't enough refrigerant in the system.

i thought the pressure sensors were mounted in the high pressure line by the radiator fan?

I think that wire will cut the compressor off if the coolant temps get too high. I always just delete the A/C so I have not studied the system really...

Yeah, the A/C system has a bunch of cutouts... and they are in series so that if any one of them cries "halt" the entire system stops. Low pressure, high pressure, engine overheating, too cold out... lots of cutouts.

The one in the picture is probably the "engine temp too high... turn off the A/C to give the poor engine a break" cutout. The pressure cutouts are on the various A/C lines themselves.
