Hey all,
I finally have my car on the road and took it out for its first run with the rebuilt engine :) The car runs and drives great. I put 200 kms on the car today in the city and some highway, I drove it lightly and noticed I burned almost 1/2 tank of fuel in that 200 kms. The car has a 70L tank. Is that normal for a new engine to consume that much fuel? The brakes, Tires and tire pressure, and wheel bearings are all good and in spec.

If I did my conversions right that would be equal to about 13.4 miles per US gallon.. A tad lower is normal, but that's crazy low MPG's... :o With fuel leaks, a dirty air filter, screwed up timing and driving like and idiot I don;t think I could get that low...
First I think I would make sure you have no leaks.. Although I'd think that'd be a major leak.. The other thing to do woudl be to top off the tank and see how much fuel it did actually use.. Maybe the gauge has gone goofey...

Wow, that is very low. I now have 750 miles on my rebuilt motor. I remember that I broke in the motor pretty hard the first 20 miles, then I changed the oil, again at 100 miles, again at 250, again at 500, next is 1000 miles-2500 miles-5000 miles (synthetic). That whole tank of fuel I averaged about 30-35 miles a gallon, that is due to constant acceleration and constant downshifting when I am driving, so the motor breaks in nice and good! Further, my timing is set at .98mm with the governor mod, along with new injectors.

Is the odometer working correctly? I had a Rabbit that was doing crazy things mileage wise and was about to start tearing into stuff when luckily I noticed the odometer was only working intermittently.

I have no leaks whatsoever.... I do notice however, that its sucking in air from somewhere, but Im not sure where from. My speedo and trip are in good working order as well, they match my gps.

Speedo may be good, but the tank sending unit is a POS from a scientific standpoint, did you measure actual fuel consumed?

My 1.6L in my Dodge caravan is usally 40 mpg highway, and 23 mpg pulling a loaded camper @ 70 mph !! Did you try filling the tank after each run ? That a rather large amount of fuel to burn... seams like you'd have to have an exhaust valve broken off, and the injector on the dead cylinder pumping full fuel to get that kind of number... :-(

I'm going to run this tank of fuel and do a full fill up and calculate then. I filled the car back in December and ran it for 37kms before parking it and tearing the engine apart. I'll post up the numbers once I fill up. I'm 400kms and still have just over 30L according to the guage. The next tank might be better I'm hoping

No remotely meaningful calculation will be accomplished with the gauge involved.

Well I fueled up today. According to my Gas Cubby App on my iPhone, It looks like I got 33.4 MPG on this fill up. Not as bad as I thought, But not as good as I had hoped for either.
