Title: Question on IS bearings on eco rebuild
Post by: 470 on May 28, 2010, 05:55:01 am
I'm rebuilding my sons ECO diesel. After pressing in the new IS bearings which went very well, I installed the shaft with bearing lube and I have a concern on the amount of resistance it has to rotate it. I put a torque wrench on it to measure it and it's about 5-7 lbs. which to me seems like a lot. I've pulled the shaft out numerous time to check for galling on the bearings and theres nothing. Does any one have a spec for the clearances on the shaft to bearings? The bearings I used are top line 056 and are pre reamed. Thanks Mike

I don't know but I think it is fairly normal. I can barely move mine by hand. That is with no pulley, with the pulley on it is relatively easy.

When I did mine it felt fairly stiff as well trying to spin by hand.  That sounds about right to me too.  With the pulley on it shouldn't take much to spin it.

my 1.6td had a hard set of im shaft bearings when i put the engine in the car. but it didnt take too much 6500 rpm use to free it right up..
