Title: how much advance is to much???

well without proper tools and doin it by ear its tough to find that sweet spot (injection pump timing).
like if it runs good and doesnt puff to much smoke should i assume safe?
like i keep battling back and forth with the pump i get alot of smoke then it doesnt but not alot of power, so..........

like are there any signs of having it to advanced or retared.
if someone has signs to look for for too much advanced or too much retarted i would appriciate it so i can just lock my pump in place and leave it!!!!

too retarded and it will smoke on idle and have poor power, and hard starts.

too advanced and it will not smoke on idle, have poor power, really clattering sound, and easily start without the cold start handle.
