Title: dual Pillar Pod for MK1 Caddy
Post by: Familydiesel on April 24, 2010, 12:00:48 am
Does anyone know where I can get a dual pillar pod for my caddy?  Is there a manufacturer or another application that works?  I want to mount my pyrometer and boost guages on the driver's side pillar and need some help in finding what works well.
What have some of you done?  ;)

Thanks

These guys are developing them: http://www.vwcraft.com/ (http://www.vwcraft.com/)

Might email and inquire?

Sounded like a good lead, but went to the site and couldn't find any contact info or e-mail addresses.  It just listed that they were in process of development, but no way to contact.

If you have the e-mail or way to contact, I would be interested.

It seems like there would be a narrow pillar pod from a different application that would work reasonably well.  Anyone have sucess with another application?

I don't know how different they are, but you could probably make these work. Heat and bend or otherwise

I don't have any info I just saw it a while ago when looking for an a-pillar gauge pod, I decided to use the a/c vents in the middle and perhaps I'll add something later.

If you're good with fab/playing with plastics I've seen the universal ones look good on a few different applications but I've also seen terrible installs. I guess I probably shouldn't care considering the condition of the rest of my interior  :(

Hey guys, the site you mentioned (vwcraft.com) is mine. I developed a MK1 pod 3-4 years ago in a vacuum-formed abs, but they never fit quite right because the a-pillar is so narrow. I am in the process of a redesign and this time around they will be molded in epoxy/fiberglass with a factory texture. I hope to have some pictures of the master on the site in the next couple of weeks.

Cheers,
Jake

Ask and yea shall receive!

I'll keep an eye on your site. Or maybe post more product info/pics here when they're finished.

Hello all,

Been busy with some other things (pregnant wife) and I'm just now getting back to this. I'm completing the finishing touches and should have the pod finished this weekend. With any luck I can post some pictures in the next week.

Question - anyone ever tried fitting the 83-84 a-pillar plastics to an earlier MK1? I know the windshield seal is different but does the a-pillar cover still fit? I may be looking for an early MK1 owner to test fit this pod before production. Any takers?

Also, this a-pillar pod is designed to hold 2 gauges. Is there any interest in a 3 gauge pod?

Thanks for the update.

Do you have any timeline for when we can expect mk2 parts?

Excellent. Once you post pictures of where the gauges are located I'll be able to see if I'd want a third or not. I hate wide A-pillars.

I should have them done at about the same time. Here is the rough shape of the mk2 pod:

I've heard the a-pillar plastic will fit, but it may stick out a lot in the front, because of the bulkiness of the seal.  I recall when you were trying to make a "one size fits all" a few years back, and I brought up the seal issue.

I'd be willing to test fit it....  what's involved on my end?  Shoot me a PM.

I could take a 3 gauge pod for test purposes :D :D :D I was wondering where I am going to put oil, volt, egt, boost, water, and ... I think I had another one maybe oil temp. Anyway, I was going to do a 5 or 6 gauge under the radio. I would rather have EGT, Boost, and Water temp up higher though.

Pretty sure I bought one of your MK2, dual pod, A-pillar mounts, when they first came out.

The initial mock-up is about 95%. I will have pictures up this weekend.

Are most looking for a 2 or 3 pod arrangement?

Here are some photos of the finished design. Currently there are only two pods on the pillar but I would consider a 3 pod pillar if there was enough interest.

This week I will be sending the pillar to ToddA1 to check fitment with an early windshield seal. If all checks out I will be finishing the molds next week.

I'm shooting for $60, but it all depends on the final cost of the molds.

I should know more within the next 2-3 weeks.

I'm currently undecided as to whether I want a 2 or 3 pod cluster (for a mk2) but I really like what I see with that 2 pod pillar.

I can't wait to get one.

$60 sounds fair to me.

I would really like to see a picture from the driver seat of one installed so I can see how much it will restrict vision.

I understand completely. To keep visibility to a maximum I have pushed the pods down on the pillar and rotated them more to the leading edge as much as possible. The MK1 a-pillar trim is extremely narrow so it was quite a challenge.

I hope to have photos from multiple perspectives very soon.

Update:

Last week I found an 81 Cabriolet in the salvage yard and from what I could tell it had the press-fit seal. I made some adjustments to the windshield edge and I will be shipping it off to have it test fit by someone else early this week.

the seal on the 84 is way different from any other rabbits isnt it? or is it just that it looks different because all the plastic trim is around the window?

To the best of my knowledge the seal on 83 and 84 have bonded windshields and earlier years have the pressed in seal. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I started with the stock a-pillar plastic trim from an 84 (I believe). As of right now it looks as if the windshield edge and the top of the pod should be the only differences between the two types of seal. Depending on the year/seal the pods may need to be molded and cut differently. Unfortunately I won't know for sure until I have someone else test fit on each type.

Thanks for the offer but I have 2 in my shop.  ;)
The MK3 pod is 3rd on my list. Once I wrap up the MK1 I need to finish the MK2, but it is 90% there so it should go quick.
Would you be interested in 2 or 3 pods?

ToddA1 was kind enough to test fit the pod on his 81 and sent some pictures. There were a couple of spots that needed to be adjusted and afterward the pod fit really well.

(http://www.vwcraft.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/MK1-pod-pillar.jpg)(http://www.vwcraft.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/MK1-pod-front.jpg)(http://www.vwcraft.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/mk1-pod-taper.jpg)

Now I need to find someone with an 83/84 (with the factory a-pillar trim installed) to test fit this pod. Any takers? A free finished pod would be in order of course.   ;)

Thanks! The part you see is just primered. The finished parts will be black and have the factory vinyl-like texture you see on the other interior plastics. To mount the pillar you will need to drill 1-2 screw holes, depending on which year your MK1 is. In the photos you will see one hole in the factory location for the 83/84's and the other will be at the top of the pod section. Earlier MK1's never had a-pillar trim so I don't believe there are any screw holes from the factory. In this case you would need to drill 2 holes.

I'm shooting for $60.

The shape is done and I am working on the texture now. It's a very time consuming process but it's looking sharp! When they will be available depends on a couple of things, how busy I am at my day job, and when my son decides to make an appearance. We're expecting him early-mid August so that will delay things a bit. I hate to give you a date only to have more delays, but before September should be safe. Thanks for hanging in there!

I'm guessing by his user status that RoR is on vacation or traveling.
So he probly won't get any notifications from here right away.
Might want to try his direct email if you have it.

If he knew he would need to return the pod from the start, i'm sure he will do that. If he thought it was his to keep for being a tester - it might not be as simple.   :'(

Hey guys, sorry I've been out of touch. Last couple of months I was just about overwhelmed with MK2 pod orders (no complaints) and with my family and career there wasn't any time for anything else. Kevin was kind enough to send me the a-pillar trim from his rabbit a while back and I was able to mold and rework the bottom portion of the pod. I'm going to be sending the fixed pod back to him next week and as soon as he lets me know how it fits I'll post it here.

Kevin, please check your email!
