ok so i used a "used" pump that was off the car for 3 years i guess it was a hit and miss (50.00)
so i took the car to get timed and when it did it smoked like blueish colour smoke on idle on and runs rough and when driving like no power but mechanic said he did check pump???
but motor on has like 20000 on since rebuild but car sat for 8 months before getting going again so rings should be fine but it runs like a bad of *** since the replacment pump was put on.......like do pumps work or dont work or can the work half azz?
car ran good when parked but after this other pump put on not so good
please any thought woulr be great!!!!

I would venture to guess that the timing is retarded. The advance piston could be siezed but it should idle ok if it was.
-
is there anyway to advance the timing without any tools, like i guess to just ball park it??
he had a 3 foot pry bar to pry the pump away from the motor to time it......
would it run it a valve was sticking open???? from sitting???
like is there any way to tell if the pump is junk and this is whats casusing the problem???
like the pump doesnt leak at all and the motor abviouly runs so im tending to lean with the timing issues but its a garage that deal with timing alot so i wouldnt think that they would have messed it up but whats weird to is WHEN I PULL THE COLD START LEVER I DONT HEAR ANY CHANGE IS RPM LIKE NON....MY OTHER 1.9 AAZ WHEN I PUT IT BUMPS RPM UP LIKE 150-200 RPM OR SO BUT THIS I HEAR NO CHANGE!!!!
MAYBE THAT WILLL HELP,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

one more thing.....
when it sits on idle it smokes like crazy but when i get it up to speed the smoke goes away but has no power......revs but no power!
and if i start it and it cold it dies imidiatly after i let off gas but once its warm it will stay running but runs rough!
i really hope this is somthign simple!!!
its just weird b/c it ran like a top before the other pumped screwed up and after a diff. pump and re-timing runs like ***!!!
OH IF I WANTED TO TEST THE 180 OUT THEORY COULD I MARK OFF IN PAINT MARKER ALL THE PULLEYS AND ROTATE PUMP 180 THEN JUST THROW THE BELT BACK ON???
WOULD ANYTHIG MOVE?? IM SORRY IF THESE QUESTIONS SOUND DUMB BUT THERE IS ALOT INVESTED IN THIS THING AND IM NOT GOING TO PAY SOMEONE TO DO SOMETHING TWICE!
-
Just advance it a little......NOT, WITH A 3ft PRYBAR.
-
would it be wise to throw on a dial indicator on the top of pump so i know how much its actually moving?
my dial is in inches .001 incriments .039 is 1mm
how much should i advance it at a time?
and if im advancing it should i be adjusting the belt tension as well each time i advance.........???
thanks for the advise......

Just make a mark with a sharpie at the point where the IP meets the mount, when it moves you'll be able to tell.
Adjusting the pump timing has no effect at all on the belt tension, the pump should roll forward to retard the timing and back towards the head to advance it.
To adjust the timing you always need tools, a half inch end wrench and socket to loosen the FOUR mounting bolts. There's one you gotta get to through a hole in the IP sprocket and one under the back of the IP, the other two are easy to see.
