Title: lots of black smoke on boost?
Post by: MouseGTD on February 16, 2010, 11:52:21 am
on the way home tonight giving it some bean round the twisty's bits, came to a pretty big hill and had to slow down for a couple of cars it's at this point i realized the car was blowing black smoke. it normally blows a bit of black when it's under load but as soon as it comes on boost it's pretty clear, but even on boost it's now blowing black.

it's a 1.6td with pretty much every thing from the how to make your 1.6td faster thread bar the gov mod. since this has happened i've eased all the adjustments off on the pump (smoke screw, star wheel, ect) in the hope that that might of sorted it but it's still blowing black smoke even on boost.

has any one got any idea's what this could be? could it be the turbo going? although i 'think' it was still boosting quite high psi's ???

cheer's for any help

What gauges do you have? What were they reading?

only psi gauge and i was too busy looking in the mirror at the smoke, sorry.

since then i've turn the boost down so now it's just boosting up to 10 psi. it still seems to pull well it's just smoking like a trooper

boost leak or inlet restriction?

I would turn the boost back up, crank the star wheel up so there is more tension on the pin/ less fuel till more boost.

And as mentioned check for boost leaks.

i'll have a look over it tonight, where should i be looking for leaks? i have no intercooler so the only obvious place i can think of is the rubber hose from the turbo to the inlet?
