Title: 1.6 TD with 1.9Td transmission
Post by: peacedub on February 11, 2010, 04:08:27 pm
My 1.6td project is nearing the end, and i still dont have a tranny. I found a 93 plus jetta at the junk yard, its got a 1.9td in it and the tranny looks really fresh. Im thinking about getting it along with the driveshafts...

Has anyone had this combination on this car? Would it be much different from the 1.6 tranny?
Any advantages/disadvantages?

TIA. 8)

thank you .

the 1.6 had a AGS in it. which had a pretty good gear ratio, want to get equavalent or better acceleration...but i also want a long 5th gear (i have a strait pipe and i want to enjoy my radio as well =])

AGS (86-90 1.6 Diesel)    3.94    3.45    1.94    1.29    0.91    0.75

The choice is between:

1.The 1.9Td tranny from a mk3 jetta

Im not sure what the code is for it

2.a 90 Jetta Diesel tranny

AWY ('90 Diesel)    3.94    3.45    1.94    1.44    1.13    0.89

3. Diesel Golf tranny

ACH ('85 1.6 Diesel)    3.94    3.45    1.94    1.37    1.03    0.75

i also have a GLI 9a close ratio trasmission but i think it would suck to have on a daily diesel has anyone ran one of these?

Wow, I can't imagine doing better than an AGS....unless an AGS with a 0.71 (although really wouldn't be much different).
I've run a lot of ACH's and AGS's and I prefer the deeper 4th and smaller step to 5th.

Or, get ahold of a gas ACN which is merely an ACH with different final. THAT should allow you to hear your radio!
Most guys report that ACN's are still plentiful. You might loose a little acceleration with it....so....get up earlier in the morning!

X2 on that one.

The AAZ will likely have a CHD or similarly geared box.

In my opinion a ASF, AON, ACN, ACL gearbox would be better then the AAZ box for 3 reasons
1- better reverse idler gear (mk3 boxes have a known problem with them)
2- see my quote from Dakotakid
3- 90mm flanges

I've got an AAZ tranny behind a 1.6 in Jezebel... Mine's pretty bagged though (closing on 300,000 km)

1st sucks, there's not much in the way of acceleration there at all.  Once you're moving though it's ok.  It's a great highway transmission but I'd actually prefer something geared a little lower around town.  On the highway it's pretty much perfect - I spend most of my time right around 2K RPM give or take a few hundred in 5th.
