Title: Cold start lever broke !!
Post by: aadonline on January 16, 2010, 06:11:11 am
Hi guys:

I broke the handle of the cold start lever (AAZ motor). Now the lever is all the way out. Is it ok to run the way it is? will it hurt my pump. I hate to push it back in. If I cant get it out its hard to start :-[

Thanks

It depends on the style of driving you do. If you idle a lot then eventually you will seriously damage your pump. It won't happen overnight though. If you are mostly above 1500-2000 RPM then you shouldn't have any adverse effects.

Can you clamp vise-grips onto the broken stub so you can still move the cable in and out?

Can you get to the fitting on the pump where the cable connects?  I don't have a lever on my car, I just use a screwdriver to move the lever on the pump.  But I don't know if the AAZ pump is the same as my 1.6 pump.

Hi
the dealer can order that handle in

the handle and the plastic locknut thing was under $10

any old pieces to take in with you ,they bring up a photo of all the parts.

take a few days to order in.   I used pilers for months it SUCKS!

Mine has been broken since I bought it over 2 years ago.  I kept it pushed in and just adjusted the base rpm to about 950rmp.  Works for me.

Hi Henchman

After the HUGE repair bill if be paying for me car, a small handle broken on cold start will be fix, not to screw up the rebuilt pump.  That the way I work. $ 10 item on a $ 4000 overhaul, to advance the timing.

just put some Mc Donalds or Burgerking trays under your rear tires and pull the e brake, then drive around the big parking lot drifting like no other.

You can also do this on wet grass if you live someplace with no ice.

It handles crazy loose, pretty much exactly how you think it would handle.

except the bad thing about wet grass is the fact that its wet grass, the tires have a hard time grabbing it.

on a sidenote, when my 5000 was still running, i could go out in my field, and its pretty big. bout a half mile wide and mile long. many a day during the summer i would go out there and just drift. i kept it sideways for over a mile once, but it was back, and forth, not just completely sideways un touched for a mile. either way, lots of fun to be had with FWD cars.

and these cars pretty much handle like they have swivel casters on the rear axle if you put something slick under there. (grass, food trays, whatever you can think of.)

I'm not using the cold start, because is leaking, and I don't want to disturb it, to avoid leaking more, sometimes doesn't leak at all, more when the engine is cold and idling.
Talking about that, am I doing any harm to the engine starting it (when is very cold) without using the cold start?
Btw the car is a 82 Rabbit...

Thanks
