Title: Are all VE pumps like this?
Post by: lovinthedeez on January 13, 2010, 04:27:01 pm
So my little lady was so nice to get me a new metric dial indicator and adaptor so I can finally time my pump.  I've never had to do the actual pump timing, even though I've done head gaskets and timing belts a  bunch of times.  guess I was just lucky. ;D.  So background, its a 1.6 n/a from a 81 rabbit.  so according to the bentley, I should be at .088 + or - .02.  I did that, and got the same number over and over and over, so I knew I had the routine right.  So after trying to start it over and over and over, I tried a few different settings.  timed it prolly ten times, and never got a good startup when cold (it ran fine before ::))  so I cleaned up everything and found some stampings by where the mark is to line up the pump by the pulley.  it had a .095 stamped above a .112.  So I timed it up to .103, and voila.  so since I don't have another pump to look at.  do they all have a stamping like this?  maybe rebuilt? maybe mk2?   I have bentleys for the mk1 and 2; and neither have tolerances of .095-.112.

whew.....you made it.....thanks for reading.....

love the roundies and red stripe gti bumper in the pic. the background really makes it look good.

Never noticed any stampings myself.. Even with having a dial indicator I rarely use it for timing, I guess my ears still work okay..  After adjusting mine to run and start properly I checked to see where it was..  It's rather pleased to be at 1.02mm.. It's also an '81...

Using cold start lever?  Shouldn't need it unless it's freezing really with timing in the .9 region in my experience, but in the .8's it can be rough cold without.
Never seen stamps either.  If it was me I'd start with verifing TDC on the crank, then loosen the cam and make sure it's right, etc, etc, then try it again.
But I'm sorta OCD.

Ohh thaaat mark.  Mine has em, 1xx and 095.  No idea what they indicate, some calibration when it's built I assume.
