Title: De-glazing/Honing engine question.
Post by: kaneb on January 09, 2010, 10:31:45 am
Hi-
So i'm at the the point where i'm de-glazing/honing the block.  The cylinders look great just are a bit glazed, im just honing it to de-glaze it.  Just a quick run through with the hone.  My question is i don't have a cylinder bore gauge, and im ordering my bearings and rings today.  For just a quick deglaze, not an actual hone from a machine shop i won't need the oversize rings will i?  I was just going to get standard.  Is that a problem..or should i say turn into a problem, i dont want to be one of those horror stories when i have excessive blow by because my rings aren't the correct ones?  Or what do you others usually do?  This is my first vw rebuild.  Im used to the big bore engines with cyl. sleeves.

Any help is appreciated as i would like to order these parts today so i can start assembly soon.

TIA--Kane

Do you know if the cylinders are already up to spec? If so, then just deglazing will not affect anything as you are only supposed to run the tool for 30 seconds or so. If they are out of spec, then it'll smoke anyways.

If you hone it enough to need new rings you'll also need new pistons, that said if it's within specs then honing won't get it out of spec.......unless you way over do it ;D

I'll be watching your build Kane since I'll likely be doing the same with mine  :)
